    Hi Forum
I have had lots of success in swapping hard drives in and out of different machines but this error has got me stumped. Argh where to begin..

I have a working hard drive with XP pro. I went to put it into a different PC.

When I boot up everything looks and sounds normal until I wait for XPs loading graphics to appear.

Then there is a quick message flashed on screen, too quick to see, so I videod it and played it back on the TV until I froze the message and could just read it.

It said something about a virus detected and the system going into self protection. Then the PC reboots, then get a XP didn't start properly message and then it will just go around in circles re-booting, flashing the message and around we go.

I thought this message was coming from the bios so I disabled the anti virus option in the bios, no change.

If I take the hard drive and put it back on my other PC it boots no problem. The hard drive has been scanned for viruses and nothing has been found!

The PC I am trying to put this hard drive into boots OK with its current (ME) OS.

I thought maybe it was a boot sector virus, so I will try and get a dedicated boot sector virus scan sorted out.

    TIA

PS I am using the self same hard drive on this PC right now!!!!

    Hi Forum
I managed to get this STOP code off the screen

    0X0000007B (0XF8FCA528, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

    TIA

Swapping the disk to a different machine is the problem, see here for a possible fix.

By different machines you mean same models right? The OS doesn't like it when all the hardware changes. IDE or SATA drive? Sata AHCI or native IDE?
<---Check both machines BIOS, see if this matches.

Goldenskull I can't follow the rules

    Depends on the different Systems
Like for say if you swamped out the HD of a Dell and tried too put it into a Compaq or another brand it most likely might not work be cause of the different Setups the computers have they have different BIOS and Lots of different Hardware that the other computer does not have installed.Best idea is too just Bye a second hard drive there Cheap on Newegg.com Bye a 80gig they round about 30 or 40 dollars.Don't know the reason way your swamping out Hd's and putting them into another computer But its better if you use a FlashDrive card there Cheap you can get a 16gig at a local store like walmart or radio shack i use won my self too store like programs so i don't have too keep re-downloading them

Firstly they are not the same machines one is an IBM Aptiva (the source where I cloned XP HD from) The host or destination I'm not sure I guess it is generic, I would need to get the bios number and run that by MOBO Cops to find out what it really is.

The reason I do this is because I evolve my PCs as time goes bye from hand me downs and cast offs etc.

This has worked fine since 1998,thats when I actually bought a computer with Win 95 on it LOL : ).

I had a PC with ME and one with XP and I wanted both with XP.

Most of the time the O/s is very robust and just handles the different hardware and things have been OK for year.

My latest experiment to fix this is like this:

I am booting off the Win ME HD and have the clonerd XP disk as a slave, I wanted to check that the BIOS could see the XP HD and it did, but when Win ME started the O/S could not see the XP HD at all.

What do you make of that??

    TIA

The machines are on different hardware + Windows is set to use drivers for the old hardware. It only takes a different chipset on a motherboard to trigger this.

If this method worked for you previously, you must have been using very similar hardware or were very lucky.

Please, don't expect us to help you fix an ME problem like this, it was bad enough when we had to use it ourselves way back - it was a dinosaur about three steps away from extinction when it was released.

Add to that the fact that you are almost certainly breaking licensing terms for these operating systems and you'll find you'll receive little help here at Majorgeeks.

My view is that if Microsoft made software that worked all the time every time I would be happy to pay for it, or even performed with % of up time guaranteed, like most engineered systems or equipment has to.

Unfortunately they have been unable to do this since they started making software.

I have to send endless reports back to microsoft so thay can debug windows for which I don't get paid, using my internet connection bandwidth and my time.

If Windows was a retail product you would almost certainly take it back to the shop for a refund or replacement.

I guess that makes us even LOL.

Just one thought is I don't think ME can read NTFS partitions, only FAT32. It should be able to see the HD attached to the computer but won't be able to read any files on an NTFS partition.

You would need something like NTFS4DOS to do that.

ME doesn't see it in MY Computer, but as stated the bios sees it.

Do I need to map it?

ME has got a driver installed for it in "control Panel / system"

But the driver for both the HD with ME and the second HD are the generic ones.

    TIA

It has been quite a while since I used ME (yes, I bought it--got a free neon plastic watch too!). Is Control Panel>System the same as Device Manager? So the HD is listed, such as Maxtor 60Y80Y0, under Disk Drives or similar?

I'm asking if ME sees the HD (the physical hardware device) in Device Manager? Of it sees the device but doesn't show the drives in My Computer that could be simply because My Computer will only list drives/partitions that are formatted to FAT32.
