as of late I'm getting popups of an sy.exe wanting access to the internet via my Comodo alerting me about it.

Of course, I didnt let it access because it isnt something I knew.

I quickly googled it and found a similar thread from 2004 on this very forum about it:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=144684

Since this is from 2004, and not exactly helpful as it showed more issues than the sy.exe one I'm having, I'm a bit lost as to how to proceed on this matter.

I will put up a hijack this log.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.

Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Note:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

I have way too many tools to download just to fix this issue. Is there a guide how to reformat and keep clean a new WinXP SP2 install instead?

If downloading 4 tools is too much.....then I would guess reformating, reinstalling you OS, reinstalling all your drivers, reinstalling all of your programs, and setting up your protection programs would be easier.

To reformat, you boot to the xp cd and follow the prompts.

When done, and you have your internet connection back, you can read this:
