Sydney Harbour Bridge, 75 years old today

Today, Sunday, March 18, is the 75th Anniversary of the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It will be closed all day to motor traffic. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to walk the length of the bridge.

Together, with the Opera House and Ayers Rock (Ularu), are probably the 3 most recognised landmarks of Australia.

It is the best man made structure for a fireworks display as anyone watching New Years Eve celebrations will remember.

Today's celebrations are for the public to be able to walk the bridge.:wave

Around 200,000 walked the Bridge apparently.
TV show last night (Sunday) had a doco on the building of the Bridge.
Talk about lots of political intrigue, bungling, deceit, etc., and that was before they they started building.
16 died in the construction. No safety belts, no rigging in those days.
Wonder it wasn't more that died.

It's a wonder it ever got built. Good to see politicians are still the devious lot they were in the 1920-1930's. Not much changes there.
