I'm always curious to why there are so many applications listed in my Sygate software version 5.6 build 2808 so that each is checked by Sygate. Is it crucial that they be maintained in there or can all be removed? My Norton Anti-virus checks incoming & outgoing. Spybot & Spywareblaster do their jobs. Adaware by Lavasoft does it check.

Thanks Mark...I'm still a bit confused. All the applications cited within Sygate are programs that I have currently running. I really don't know how to measure the programs I should select to "allow" or "deny". I'm trying to find out what this "nt kernal & system" window keeps popping up in the lower right side of my screen saying it's been blocked from accessing the system. what is this?

I agree with Mark. Even though you have antivirus apps and spyware apps, they don't limit access to the internet, both incoming and outgoing, as a firewall does. The firewall lets you decide whether you want a program to access the internet for updates or whatever, and it also allows you to prevent any outside programs or processes from accessing your computer.

NT kernel and system could be Windows update trying to connect and scan to see if you need any updates, or it could be WGA checking your activation.

While all the entries that you see in Sygate may be programs/processes that you have running, that is the way that it should be. You had to grant or deny access to every program on that list when you installed the firewall. Hope this helps! :)

Yes, this helps....thanks. I've removed & began the process over again to allow or deny applications to be checked by Sygate. I've been reluctant to inoke the Windows critical update feature because in the past it caused system problems. I've now re-set Windows update to on & have downloaded the critical ones. SP 2 updated theirs when I installed it a year ago & now I have the latest. I believe with this I'll not see that I've blocked the NT Kernal & System window from popping up any more.

I'd like you to look at these 2 screenshots. One is a shot of the applications that sygate checks and it has NT Kernal & System as "allowed"...however the window still pops up in the bottom right corner of the monitor saying "NT Kernal & System has been blocked from the system". Question...should this be blocked & why? The other shot is the incoming traffic for the generic ip address being blocked...why?
