I've installed the aforementioned version of Symantec on my system but have had major problems with it. First, an overall explaination of what has happened.

I was sure to NOT install autoprotect, as I do not want symantec deleting everything it finds. The reason is I'd like to scan directories manually.

Once the installation is complete and the system has been rebooted, problems arise. First I scan a directory with a file I KNOW my old (and of course uninstalled) antivirus detected. I want to see if Symantec would successfully detect it and it did. However, a second file (in the same folder) which it did not mark as detected became inaccessible. I have tried to copy that file to another location only to get the "access denied - may be in use" error. So I reboot and try to copy the file again, this time without manually scanning. The file is still inaccessible.

At this point the worst occurs. A symantec message pops up telling me that "autoprotect has successfully quarantined file X" where file X is one of my network IDS utilities! I double check the configuration and it still says Autoprotect is disabled. It is at this point I uninstall Symantec's piece of shit software.

I reboot. I try to copy the file that was previously inaccessible and guess what? Access denied. This means that even though Symantec was uninstalled, some of its components remain in the system and LOCKING my FILES.

Symantec is the worst piece of software I've ever had the experience of using. I advise you guys to stick to other antivirus products. This has ruined my system as I still cannot read files that it would detect were it still installed. Oh, and a side note. After uninstalling, my task manager no longer lists the User name of the processes it lists. The user column is ENTIRELY BLANK now.

Thanks Symantec. I hope your company goes down in flames.

    Hi and welcome to MajorGeeks.

There aren't too many Symantec fans here, and your experience, which is common, is one reason why.

I used to support their AntiVirus, but no more.

BTW, Symantec would never burn, it's too bloated. :)

Avast and AVG are pretty good. We have them HERE.

Only install ONE antivirus program. A Squared can also be installed as it's not a true AntiVirus program, but compliments them.
