Symantec Antivirus Removal

I searched past threads for removing Symantec but haven't found anything that applies to my situation.

I have Symantec Antivirus v.10.0.0.359 and have switched to AGV. Now my PC is running slow and hanging, with CPU usage at a consistent 100% at times. I tried removing Symantec through Add/Remove Programs and was only able to remove LiveUpdate. When I try to remove Symantec I'm told I need the original installation CD, which I do not have.

I've searched for Symantec's .msi file but it's missing.

I've tried using the Norton Removal Tool but when I run it I'm told I need to remove Symantec from Add/Remove Programs first. :mad

Solutions anyone?

 

are you sure you looked for symantec, and norton in your add/remove programs?

sorry, i didn't notice that you said you couldn't remove it.

 

I looked for all Symantec and Norton entries in Add/Remove. I only had LiveUpdate and Symantec AntiVirus. The link you provided is the same I used but the removal tool requests the removal of Symantec using Add/Remove first, which I can't do. Totally useless in my case.

So, the question is: How is it possible to remove a program when the uninstall requires the original installation disk?

I used the manual removal instructions for my app provided by Symantec here. I was then able to run the Norton Removal Tool to clean up the rest. Ran CCleaner & RegCleanr for good measure and AusLogics Registry Defrag. My PC is unbelievably much faster and I am now a happy camper. :celebrate

Anyone following the manual uninstall plus the addition steps above prepare for about a five hour task. It's worth it.
