Symantec Backup Exec.

I'm about to be implementing a better backup system for the campus i admin. my last post about this was terribly vague and retarded, my apologies. i got off the phone with a nice lady from the company we work with for our software stuff, and she gave me a quote for $8,000 to get an 800GB tape drive and the necessary hardware and Symantec Backup Exec. I need some advice here. I'm extremely hesitant to go to my boss with an $8,000 price tag to back up our 4 servers. our campus is small and we dont need to spend that much. does anyone have any ideas on what else i can use? i would like to back my servers up to tape, but 8 grand doesnt sit well with me. i'm open to any suggestions.

Have you considered external hard drives as an alternative? I found this article, which seems pretty convincing, IMO: Are Tape Backup systems obsolete?

 

yeah i'll probably end up doing that. i'm not going to spend that kind of money for a backup system.
