Sysprotect Removal Problem - or maybe it's MBlast

I inadvertantly hit the wrong button on a pop-up and got slammed with Sysprotect. I immediately started work on removing it.

I've apparently removed all traces on a surface level, as Spybot and AdAware no longer find any trace of it, and Vundofix doesn't find anything.

    BUT

I occasionally get a blue screen of death, and if it's not that, another odd message that requires my system to shut down. I've never seen this type of dialog box in all my many years of Windows use. I don't have a screen shot of it, or a full text of the message, but basically it says that a system error has happened and that Windows will shut down in 60 seconds, and begins counting down. At 0:00, the system restarts. It does say something referring to the "Spooler Subsystem App" having a fatal error, and that the command came from "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" and something else referencing "...system32/lsass.exe".

Whenever the system restarts, I get a message from Spybot Resident concerning a registry change involving HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\NI.USYP_0002_N91M1708="C:\documents and settings\jim\application data\sysprotectscannerinstall]1].exe" -nag". This first appeared as a deletion, so I set it to allow the change and put that into my "white list" so that it would always happen, and it happes every time I restart now. I deleted that registry entry and the file it is asking well before now.

The fact that all vestiges of sysprotect are gone should make me happy, but this hourly system shut down is certainly ANNOYING!!!!!!!!!!!

    Here is my Hijack log:

Edit: Removed inline HJT log for guide below to be run

Any help from anyone is appreciated.

    Jim

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Looks like you still have some malware on your PC, and especially with still being at SP1 your XP will be vunerable to some malwares.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

    Sorry for not following protocol.

Running all the programs and checks appears to have cleared up my problem. The hourly shutdowns have ceased, at least for the past 12 hours.

However I'll still post the logs in case something is lurking there waiting to pounce unexpectedly.

    Thanks.

    Jim

First Disable Spybot's TeaTimer as requested in the READ ME or it may block fixes.
    • Run Spybot and click Mode
    • Select Advanced Mode.
    • Then click Tools and select Resident.
    • Now in the right window pane, uncheck TeaTimer.
    • Also while this is open, in the left column now select IE Tweaks
    • and then in the right pane make sure all the Miscellaneous locks are unchecked.
    • Now quit Spybot!
Uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now! Then delete the below two folders which may be left behind by the uninstall:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS2\Application Data\Sunbelt Software

Thanks for the help. Before I proceed with uninstalling Java, I need to point out something with my computer. As Halo noticed, I am still running Windows with just SP1. Without going into the details, this is a system that cannot update to SP2. Will this cause any problems in updating Java?

Right now I'm on a Windows XP SP1 system and it is running the current Sun Java version! So the answer is no!
