I have windows xp media edition. Downloaded a file to clone the hard drive onto a new one. I guess something else came with it and now I keep getting error ( c:\\windows\system32\trutils.dll ). Am unable to get into the control panel and have lost the desktop background. Have run norton and superspyware. Have gone to Microsoft with no help. Can this be fixed without formating? Thank you: Rodwell :(

Are you sure the error points to trutils.dll? Might it be rtutils.dll ??

Go to start / run / and type:
sfc /scannow and have your OS disc handy. Run it twice and hope it finds the missing file.

TimW thank you. I will try that. My OS disk consists of 14 disks I made when I first got the computer. Rodwell.

This is a download of an .iso file of just the Recovery Console for XP.
Burn to CD with Nero or other 'disc image' capable tool and boot.

    XP Recovery Console.

You should have this just in case. It could be used to replace the file if not found.

TimW The site says the temporary key has expired and I need a new one. There is no place on the site to obtain a key. Rodwell

What site? Are you referring to the XP Recovery Console file? It should just pop up a download file.

Since you have so many disc's, I am assuming they are your backup or restore disc's. You may not be able to use them to do a sfc /scannow command.

Have you tried doing a system restore to before this error happened?

TimW. I now have the rc.ios files on a cd but the computer still tells me to insert the right disk. I also restored the computer a week before the trouble started with no resultes. I also tried sfc /scannow no susess. How do you copy files to the dll cache? Rodwell

TimW: For the second time I rebooted the computer from the disk you had me make and it finally took it. Rebooted the computer again and the problem is solved. Thank you very much. Rodwell.
