I have been trying to access files on my old pc form my new one and i keep getting this error message System error 1058 has occurred. The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because no enabled devices are associated with it.

I have connected the firewire cable between the two computer. Thanks for your help.

Try this to enable the service you are trying to use which might be disabled....

    1. Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management.

    2. Expand Services and Applications.

    3. Press Services.

    4. Double-click the service that you want to enable.

    5. Set the Startup type.

    6. Press the Start button.

Edit: I see mine and Cochese posts crossed.

Try ones that are disabled and the description on the left hand side of what each one does sounds like it may be relevant. Try one at a time and if it doesn't change anything, reset it back to disabled. e.g. Computer Browser, Telnet. You made need to enable the corect service on BOTH machines.

    You might try:

    SSDP Discovery Service
Plug and Play - don't think that should ever be disabled

    Are either of those disabled?

    What about

    Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service

What are you trying to do exactly? Move files from one computer to the other through a network? Can you see the files? Do you not have an external usb drive you could use?
