Can anyone please tell me why when I go to system info, and click on the startup section, it lists things there that i don't want or have, or see anywhere else as startup items (like it doesnt show on ccleaner)

Are you talking about previous installs on your computer that no longer load at startup?

Well, two extra things are coming up that I havent had on startup in quite some time..... msmessenger... so i guess i would answer yes.
the reason i went to the sys info startup programs list to begin with is because my boyfriend was looking at his, and there are pages and pages of stuff there on his list... and they seem to replicate themselves and change on a regular basis... it says user name NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM for one, then it will say DEFAULT for the next...
    like:
    blah.... user: NT AUTHORITY
    blah.....user: DEFAULT
    blah blah ..user NT AUTHORITY
    blah blah...user DEFAULT

every one of them twice... once NT AUTHORITY, and once DEFAULT

Well the "Default", and "nt authority" refer to which user started that program, both of those are very normal things. As far as getting rid of unwanted startup items, you can uninstall the ones that you do not need or want(control panel-add/remove programs) I also suggest reading the "read first" sticky post in the malaware forum, the first step refers to getting rid of unwanted and potentially harmful programs. The msmessenger will be a little tougher, i will reply back with how to turn that off, i have to find the link for it

Ok, i was a little bit off on the advice... step 0 refers to malware(harmful) whereas you are asking about getting rid of excess, but if you are going to be in the add/remove programs anyway, make sure there is no malware software installed while you are at it

well thanks very much for the time and the link... that should take care of mine.. I just completed the " read me first" procedure and posted all my logs earlier today. It took me days to get done with that procedure!

as for my boyfriends pc... the thousands of things that come up on his list arent in the add/remove programs list, not with ccleaner either.

well, spybot does have many useful tools if you go into the advanced mode. Do that, click on toold, then uninstall info and it will tell you all registered uninstall programs.

if you are not very computer knowledgeable i would not use the advanced mode though
