system ini cannot find device error on startup

Well this one's getting to me. On startup I get the classic cannot find registry or system ini file, if you deleted it blah blah blah.

The file or device it references is c:\progra~1\symantec\symevnt.386

So what I have done is gone to run system.ini and cannot find a device that looks even remotely like the one they ask for.

I also went to regedit.exe and searched symantec and deleted every thing I could. I still get the error.

Where is this bugger hiding?

This box runs a norton network manager or some junk that I haven't been able to get rid of. Most of the norton avg etc is gone, but the uninstall for the norton manager won't uninstall.


Other than the press any key to continue at boot, this runs fine. I also went to MSoft website and their directions didn't help much. Google results deal primarily with vxd errors.

It happened when I was getting rid of the nortons, but after the no shut down problem. (fixed)

If there is no device=symevnt.386 in your system.ini file, then search the registry for symevnt

That should find the culprit.

 

Thanks Alan, I was there earlier but didn't wait for the search to finish, I thought it was hanging. Needless to say that was a real pita. Close to 100 entries, well let's just say more than I care to count.


That took care of it, and I am not willing to go after the Norton manager, I think that would take a format. Too many goodies on this box to justify wiping it, for a logon screen.
