im posting this here because as far as i can tell its a software issue.
i have previously carried out the malware removal tutorial posted on this forum and found nothing.

the problem is when i close certain applications (usualy those which use java in some way, such as web browsers, netbeans, or a java program ive written myself), the computer completely freezes up (no mouse movement, ctrl+alt+delete, does nothing), i madly clicked the mose buttons a few times which produces a motherboard beep :S .

i initialy thought this was a hardware problem because of this but i run linux ok on the same system and have no problems what so ever. so im guessing its software =?

ive tried uninstalling the jdk and jre, (i cant reinstall windows atm, i just dont have the time) but i really need help with this.

Uninstall Microsoft Java and Replace with Sun Java

Microsoft no longer supports Java and it is often a source of installed spyware and hijacks so it is a good idea to remove Microsoft Java Virtual Machine and Install Sun Java. To remove it follow these steps.

    * Select Start > Run and Enter "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall" in the Open box, and click ok.
    * Click Yes to confirm that you want to remove the Microsoft VM
    * When prompted, reboot the computer
    * Remove the following items: (Systemroot is where windows is installed (usually C:\Windows)
    o The \%Systemroot%\Java folder
o The file java.PNF from the \%Systemroot%\inf folder
o The files jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%Systemroot%\system32 folder
    o The registry subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Java VM
    o The registry subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ InternetExplorer \ AdvancedOptions \ JAVA_VM

    * As an alternative to the above steps you can try the below tool to remove MS Java.
Download and run the MSJVM Removal Tool 1.0a

    * Now install Sun Java here: http://java.com/en/

hi sorry its taken me so long to get back to this post but iv only just had a chance to respond.

im afraid this solution didnt work.

the problem seems to be in the sun jre, (which i have already tried uninstalling and re installing)

it occurs most often when i quit firefox after having browsed a page which uses java in some way. also the NetBeans IDE and OpenOffice's database program.

any other suggestions? or am i going to just have to reinstall windows?

note: i followed the malware detection removal guide on these forums and found absolutely nothing yet again, so i really dont have a clue what could be causing this.
