I just completed my weekly system maint. programs but I'm not sure in what order they should be done. Weekly, I run:
    Defrag,
    Speed Disk,
    Virus Scan,
    Disk Clean Up,
& manually empty my Temp Internet Folder,
    not necessarily in that order.

Is there any order they should be done? And is there any other sys. maint. I should do on a weekly or other basis? Thanks, you folks are great. Geeks Rule!!! :D

I would think that imo, empty the temp internet folder if you want. Then Virus scan, disk clean up, and last defrag, because your cleaning the hard drive. Then speed disk, to make what you have run faster…wobbles

Thanks for the reply Wobbles. Do you know if there is anything else I should be doing on a regular basis?

SpyWare check is advisable if you value your privacy. Either LavaSoft Ad-Aware or Spybot Search & Destroy are freeware and industry standards. Some people run both, but you don't need more than one.

Registry cleaning, such as Norton WInDoctor. I'm not sure what free registry cleaning tools exist (since I have SystemWorks I use WinDoctor), but I'm sure they do.

    Windows Update, of course.

Tanks to da Chicken. I neglected to mention that I also run AdAware and WinDoctor on a weekly basis. I think I have all bases covered now, but I forgot, Who's on first? Seriously though, I mainly wanted to know in what order I should be running these, & if it made a difference. I appreciate everyone's responses. ;)

As for AdAware vs WinDoctor, I'd run AdAware first. AdAware is going to remove entries you don't want, and WinDoctor will fix problems with entires.

Edit: I'd probably run both of these before the rest, too. These will change or delete files on the HDD, so running them after Defrag doesn't make much sense.

I wouldn't bother emptying Temporary Internet Files, as the Disk Clean-up can do that for you... just check the box next to it. I'd do that first, then defrag, then virus scan, then spyware check... and if you find a good registry cleaner.. (System Mechanic is awesome, I think) I'd do it last... but there's no right or wrong order to do these things, just better and less efficient ways... and mine might not be the best, so be warned! :)

    Thank you to everyone.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to my request. My computer seems to be sailing smoothly now. If I could only get my internet connection to download faster now (dial-up) I'll be all set. Still trying to tweak the settings.;)
