system malfunction

    my brother has a comp he built, and ever since he built it he has had problems with it.
    ASUS mobo, AMD 64 X2, 2gb memory, nvidia graphics, maxtor 160g hd. Every time he starts the comp, the lights blink and makes a beeping, then restarts. He then can turn it off and wait a minute and sometimes it will start and sometimes not. Some one told him that he has a virus on the system in the hardware, like the mobo, memory itself, but the system has never been connected to the internet. Is this system savable? Does he have a virus or hardware config prob?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    If he has not been on the internet or downloaded mail with attachment or used infected media .....then it would be a hardware issue. I suggest you post there. :)
