So ive been trying to defrag this computer for two days straight now and it's still going very slow file by file in the optimized defrag wizard - using system mehanic 5 by iolo. .. umm, is this normal?? I know defragging nomally takes a few hours, but days?

No, it's absolutely not normal. I assume you wanted to defrag your computer because it seemed to be running slow? It appears something is slowing your computer down, but it's likely not fragmented files. Did you make sure it was 'clean' first, with Antivirus & spyware scans? Are you running the defrag in safe mode? Have you run this defrag program before with better results...or even the Windows default defrag?

wait!! its going alot faster now all of a sudden . .. maybe it was bogged down in a damaged part of the harddrive all this time?? ive never noticed it going this fast . . . hmmm

is there any harm in just letting it run - no "not responding" signs yet . . .

No harm in letting it run. If you've got the patience for it. Did you do any kind of scandisk or checkdisk before the defrag? It's always a good idea to do that first to fix any filing system errors, even a physical HD scan to isolate bad sectors if you suspect any.

well in that link i posted above i referred to the fact that the computer had me run CHKDSK automatically upon startup for some reason - so it has been through that program a couple of times - should i be running any other programs besides chkdsk to further service possible bad sectors? - im sure there are some in there somewhere

system mechanics defrag sucks, it does the same thing on my machine too. try perfectdisk or O&O they are MUCH faster.
