    Hello all.
I have managed to get myself a nice virus/malware (not sure what)
IE6 will only go to certain websites as if some DNS servers are being blocked. Firefox runs with out a hitch.

I've gone through my usual channels, but in running any anti-virus/spyware, etc tools, my computer hits whatever is choking it out and reboots. Other times, at random, the computer will reboot. Usually during an internet session, but not limited to.

Here's the log and all your help will be appreciated.

    Edit: Inline log removed

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

I tried the instructions you provide before making my original post, but like I mentioned, anytime I do a scan of my system with any program I have tried, my system reboots.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi

If you can do Hijackthis scan then you can do Shownew and GetrunKeys, they are no different in the way they run, plus you didnt read the guide as you would never have named Hijackthis as you did D:\Program Files\Hijack This\HijackThis.exe

You only mentioned your usual channels, no mention of our steps or indication in your hijackthis log that you have bothered to even install AVG, Counterspy, to see if their scans reboot your PC.

Sadly hijackthis cannot scan for all malware on a PC, it is very limited, which is why as many of the other scans are needed, with all the cleanup steps done first, liek using CCleaner etc.

I have caught a virus from an ActiveX page (pop-up from a less-than-trustworthy site) that has crippled my IE and slowed down my internet quite considerably. Firefox is working fine, but browsing is just slow. Downloading via BitTorrent, etc. has not been affected at all.

Okay, I ran through the entire posted procedure before posting this and had some major problems.

    5. Cleaning Malware:
During safe mode I ran Ccleaner then Spybot Search & Destroy. Spybot found SmitFraud-C (5 instances), Avenue A, Inc., Doubleclick, and SpySheriff (1 instance). All were cleaned with no problems.

I tried to run CounterSpy, but my system reboots about 1/2 way through scan. I tried running it several times, but the system keeps rebooting.

6a. Online Virus and Trojan Scanning:
Could not run Bitdefender or Panda ActiveScan since they both require IE to run (would not run under FireFox) and whatever virus/malware I have is blocking several sites in IE, including Bitdefender and Panda.

    6B: Scanning for Additional Info
I have tried to run both getrunkey.bat and shownew.bat and keep getting a "File not found" message on both. No log files are being made. I did the "XP Fix" as described on your page, but it didn't help.

I renamed HJT to analyse and have attached the HJT Log.

I would appreciate any and all help.

Without some additional logs or some more detailed information about how and when you r problem occurs. There is nothing we can do for you. Random reboot are rarely caused by malware. The only log you posted is from HJT and it shows no problems but that does not mean very much which is the reason it is the last thing we normally want to see.

Did you run the scan in safe boot mode or normal boot mode?
Try also running it with your network connection unplugged. Any change?

Are you sure you followed the directions for extracting ALL the files from the ZIP file? What folders did you extract GetRunKey.zip and ShowNew.zip into? What files do you see in each folder? Are you running GetRunKey.bat and ShowNew.bat from a Windows Explorer session? Try running them from a command prompt window if you know how to do that.
