    Win 7, 64 bit,
I tried a system restore a couple of weeks ago and was unable.
This new pc came through preinstalled and I noticed system restore was not turned on and the slide bar was at 0%.
I checked the top button to turn it on and moved the bar to allow for space.
It still will not restore and says,"system restore is unable to change settings. It gives the error mesage above.
I have read the procudures to follow and have performed the actions suggested to the best of my ability.
    Any suggestions appreciated.

You may be able to get away with using the "repair" option in Windows 7 (unlike the repair option in XP, it actually works most of the time).

First and foremost, back up all of your data before attempting the repair option. Although Windows 7 repair doesn't normally hurt or erase files I'd still err on the safe side.

If the PC shipped with a DVD restore disk, insert it in the drive, reboot and follow the instructions. If the restore is on a partition in the HDD, you'll likely have to access it using the "restore" (or similar) option shown when the PC first boots up. If restoring from the HDD, read the screen carefully at each step; be sure you haven't chosen an option that wipes the drive out for a fresh install.

After the repair, check to see that System Restore is enabled.

    Hope this helps. :)

Norton Security Suite was in conflict with system restore.
To avoid this, open Norton ,click settings and uncheck Norton tamper protection. This will alow you to perform a sucessful system restore and then recheck Norton system protection.

Ugh. Norton. I think it and McAfee are responsible for more sand in the Vaseline than any other nun-malware programs. :puke

Until now I have never had a problem with Norton.
Can you recommend a good a/v proram with a firewall?

Choosing the "best" AV program on this site is a bit like starting an "East Coast, West Coast" rap music war. :boxing

Based on my personal experience, I've found both Norton and McAfee to be bloated in the amount of system resources they constantly use. On an older system (such as a single core running a minimal amt. of memory) switching to a "lighter" AV program usually improves performance. As you noted, I also seem to have a few more issues trying to totally disable all components of Norton and McAfee when doing diagnostics or software installs.

There are several free AV programs available in the downloads section. Although AVG used to be a good choice it has become more bloated in the 2011 edition. Personally, I'm now using Microsoft's Security Essentials (http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/) and it seems to have little impact on system resources. I have also heard good things about other free AV software; you might want to check the user ratings on the AV downloads page (http://majorgeeks.com/downloads29.html).

For firewalls, I use the one built-in to Windows and also have a firewall in my router.

Finally, remember that no AV program will protect you from all possible malware. It's a good idea to download and install a free program such as Malware Bytes so you can immediately scan if you think something snuck through the firewall or AV program.

I have used MSSE with the Windows firewall behind my firewalled router and I had no trouble.
    It is a good combination.
If I find more complications I will return to that set up.
I am going to see how long my present combination functions satisfactorily and then reevaluate.
    Thank you for the information.

If it's fixed, up and running there's no urgent need to switch. Glad you got the problem fixed :)
