system restore & external hard drive reading question

    hey guys, long time no talky.
    I got a problem.
    I have a 500 gig external my passport harddrive, and the other day my computer got some sort of virus thats undetectable by my antivirus program that I have now.(or so I think).
    On top of that, I cannot system restore back to a date to where everything is fine. it keeps giving me the "cannot make changes to drive because its been moved, unplugged, or turned off" message.

    So can anyone here help me out?
    basically, how do I get my rig to read my external?

    Hi

    What Windows version and Service Pack are you using?

    If you have had or suspect malware then I would run the below and wait until you get an all clear on malware infection and if all clear post back in this thread and we can take it further but with the suspicion of malware it could be a chasing of tails type of troubleshooting.

    oh derp, I forgotten to say what os I'm running.

    windows xp, with sp3. All updated and ready to rock.
    I am currently getting some spy ware removal programs atm. So I shall see if those work out or not.
