System restore has failed me on occasion.
Would a registry backup be a better alternative as it uses Windows volume shadow copy.
I can tell you the name of the program for a more valid opinion if I am allowed to do so.
    Thank you

It depends on what you are using it for and what you want / expect it to do.

System Restore is more comprehensive than a registry backup, but sometimes restoring a previous and recent registry backup
    is all that is needed.

You may be referring to [MG] Tweaking.com - Registry Backup

I have successfully used ERUNT with Windows XP numerous times.

Yes, that is the program. It sounds as though I should not be using it and use system restore? Both might cause issues and consume a lot of space.

The approach I adopt is to make sure I have a full system backup (Acronis) not more than a month old. That will protect me from almost any disaster. Beyond that, if there are suddenly unexpected problems that I can't resolve I try system restore, and if that doesn't work I restore my system image. I do use a registry backup program (the one mjnc linked to) immediately before installing new software or before making any significant change to my system, but I've never had to resort to using the backup as System Restore has always been sufficient.

I wouldn't worry about disk space - a registry backup is insignificant compared with the many GB that system restore can take up.

That is sound advice. I too have an image about a month old and will use system restore as necessary. I also have an image with Win imaging program that goes way way back. It would be a last resort and better than reinstalling.
I will ponder the registry program I used to use at tweaks.
It really is quite good and works well with the task scheduler.
    Thanks again.

I am too late to edit and forgot to mention I use Macrium for my regular imaging since Acronis required a license for 2013. I had the 2010 license and miss "Try and Decide."

I already have 2013 but Acronis are still sending me emails with heavily discounted offers on 2013. Are you not receiving them too? I've tried both Macrium and Eaeseus Todo but imo, while they are certainly better than not having anything at all, they aren't in Acronis' league.

Just for the sake of learning, does the system restore do more than the registry backup and is more comprehensive or the other way around.
If you were to draw a Venn diagram which would be the outer circle encompassing the inner?
I see the pc as being just the registry with nothing else. Therefore, I see the registry backup as the more comprehensive and would fix everything whereas the system restore is just for Windows files.
As to imaging, I agree that Acronis is for the more skilled user. I received offers from Acronis initially but no longer.

Think of the registry as a very comprehensive index to everything on the system drive, but that's all it is. System Restore will restore both your registry and most critical files but a registry backup does nothing with files, so System Restore is way more comprehensive than a registry backup.

    >>I sent two thanks and I appreciate the information. It goes to the learning folder.
