Two months ago I accidentally, and unknowingly, installed tube dimmer that was bundled with another download. My system started slowing down considerably and upon investigating...I found the tube dimmer and that it could be the reason for my system running slow. My first attempt to remove tube dimmer was not fully successful, so I did more research on how to remove it more aggressively; which I did with SuperAnitSpyware.

My system is running somewhat better since removing tubedimmer and I have tried to be careful with downloading and checking for hidden bundled items. However, a few days ago, I was trying to edit video I had uploaded from my sony video camera and was prompted that I did not have the proper Codec for Windows Live Movie Maker. The codec should have already been installed as part of the Windows Essential pack that came pre-installed on my Dell desk top...but, for whatever reason, it was missing. I truthfully may have deleted it, when I first set up the computer in 2012, thinking I didn't need a "moviemaker" and believing it would just further "bloat" my computer.

I went searching specifically for Windows Live Movie Maker Codec pack to install and thought I had safely downloaded and installed it from the MS site...but it looks like 2 Codec packs installed. One is labeled as a Microsoft Codec pack and the other had a generic label (I uninstalled it before recording the actual name...sorry). I proceeded to try to edit the uploaded video clips together and immediately received several error windows while attempting to load the clips into the Windows Movie Maker. The error messages all said something about a missing Codec...it was puzzling, since I had just uploaded the Codec packs to my system, and I could not find the reason behind these messages. The clips appeared to load to the editor fine, despite the error messages, and I was able to edit the clips; there appeared to be no further issues with using the movie editor.

HOWEVER, now my computer is running slow again AND I am having issues with my mouse tracking properly. My computer keeps "flashing" when I open my Browser (it is only a quick flash on initial browser open). The CPU "sounds" like it is running high (if that makes any sense...it is hard to explain). It takes forever for my system to boot and I often get the buffering circle when attempting to open links in new tabs on my FF (27.0.1) browser. Lastly, last night my computer just kept freezing up...I couldn't do anything with it except either wait, wait and wait some more or do a hard reboot (I opted for waiting) and my mouse was not synched...I could not direct my mouse to where I needed it to go...it was very very choppy (it felt like something else was trying to use my mouse).

I found I had installed Chrome, while working with my bank to fix a log in issue, and removed it along with several other items; including the generic Codec pack...but my system still appears to be quite slow and the CPU sounds like it is running high. I have run SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, and My AVG programs and quarantined/removed all detected issues...but my computer is still sluggish and my mouse is slow to respond (*note: the mouse is wireless).

I found your site and followed the instructions on this thread: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525. I also followed all the instructions on this page: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407. I have all the logs, per the instructions, and will include my system info.

    Installed Memory (RAM): 6.00 GB
    System type: 64-bit OS

Thank you for any advice or assistance.

This morning I received a new system message...it said that Runtime C++ was asking to be "terminated" in an unusual way and to seek assistance with the team for further information. The messaged popped up just after logging on via another message about multiple services running. What is this?

Hi there Mrs C. Sorry about the delay in a response. You slipped the radar somehow. Reviewing your logs right now. ;)

I am honestly not seeing much to do. No malware to remove, just a little junk. I advise you to post in the software forum about any issues you may have after following the below instructions.

Delete this folder if you see it:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Spigot

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thank you so much for replying and for the suggestions. I just now finished a complete re-install of my OS. Hopefully things will get back to normal. I shall definitely re-read the thread about protecting myself from malware.

    Thanks again for everything!
