    Hello!
    The system slowed to a crawl about 10 days ago. My husband mostly uses it so I don't know what he was working on when it happened, but I started getting blue screen and memory dumps last Saturday 11/21/09. I've been through the Malware Removal Guide steps (thank you for such a well-laid out guide). From what I can see I have a rootkit infection, if not more, but now I'm stuck fro how to fix it.

    Logs attached, thank you!

    Note: I had to run Combofix twice because my Comodo firewall and Symantec AV turned themselves back on halfway through the scan and froze it.

    Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    You will need to boot to the Recovery Console that you have installed (perhaps when you installed ComboFix) to remove this infection.

    Now boot to the Recovery Console and run the fixmbr to clear a Master Boot Record infection that you have.

    You can read the below to help you do this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

    Then boot back into normal mode.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Thank you Tim! You guys are a godsend. :cool

    Ok, all was done as specified, but I do get an error when running MGTools:
    ProcessDll.exe - Application Error
    The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click OK to terminate the application

    So I click ok and the MGTools scan continues on its merry way.

    Logs attached. :)
    Alyxx

    PS, I also was wondering if any of the tools downloaded for the malward removal guide should be removed? I don't want program conflicts slowing down my computer once we get through this mess. I have Symantec Corp Edition for AV and COMODO firewall, then Spyware Blaster and Spybot S&D for prevention & scanning.

    Did you go into the recovery console after running the Avenger fix and run the fixmbr command? The infection is still showing in your logs.

    We need to do it again, making sure you disable ALL AV and AS programs while we do this.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.

    Now boot into the recovery console using your xp cd and once there, enter the command:
    fixmbr
    then hit enter...then exit
    You should now reboot.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Hey Tim, yes I did everything... the only thing I can think of was that I booted to recovery console that was already loaded from Combofix instead of from the XP CD.

    I don't have an XP CD so I downloaded boot disks from Windows this time and started again.

    Avenger didn't find the temp folder you specified but it did delete the other files. log attached. I rebooted ad saved the log file.

    Rebooted again to the setup disks and they didn't work. It asked for disks 2 & 3 but never gave me the option to get to teh recovery console. Then failed on an error on disk 3. I tried it twice, then rebooted again without floppies to the recovery console already loaded and a OS choice in startup.

    Ran MGTools Getlogs. logs attached.

    :-( Sad Alyxx :cry

    Why the sad face? You did fine! Your logs are clean!

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    I had sad face because I was sure the tanking disk 3 would have kept the cleaning from working, but now I have happy face! Thank you! :-D

    I have done all of the latest steps outlined, and for the protecting I'm using:
    Active protection: Comodo firewall (free), Symantec Corp Edition AV w/Live Update
    Passive Protection: Spyware Blaster
    Scanners: Spybot S&D, MalwareBytes (free), SuperAntiSpyware (free)

    Do I need another real-time blocker on top of this? I wasn't sure if the Symantec AV worked in that capacity or if I need another blocker. If yes, what would you recommend?
