Tablets for rooting? Nook vs. the world

since I'm force-learning Android I'm up for a tablet that I can root & rom.
I've seen notes here and there about successful rootings of the relatively inexpensive NOOK. I would want color [though I actually like the grayscale ones]

You who are there, which one did you pick and why?

This thread is dated, but does anyone know about Nook cracking yet?!

My fiance wants me to help her crack Nook to Android. If you wonder why, just imagine the type of OS that Barnes and Noble puts out for their tablet! From what I've read, it seems to be as easy as cracking a smartphone. I've never done that either though.

Any suggestions or concerns would be nice. I know this operation would void the warranty, but I'm more worried about irreversible damage that I could possibly cause. With a tablet this cheap, it seems that cracking is better than buying a more expensive one.

Help Major! If I don't do this for her, she'll never marry me (jk!). :-D
