I somehow lost those cute little tabs that are on the top of the yahoo (I basically use Yahoo) pages so that you can open a new page in a tab next to the page you are using instead of having to open a whole nother page thingy.
Well, ....hmm, crud, this has happened before and I can't remember how I got them back.
Right now at the top of my page I rt click and have that 'Standard Buttons' and the 'Google' checked. And of course after that I have clicked on the 'lock the toolbar'.
Somehow....for so long ago now....my Google and my Yahoo on this drop down thingy has been back words. It's just been that way so long that I've just let it be.
So, all I really need is to refresh my memory on how to get my 'tabs' back on my pages.

gday adele firstly i would like to apologize for not replying to your other thread have been pretty busy this way,it was good to see that mark was able to help you. anyway as to your current problem i am presuming you are using internet explorer as your web browser and you use yahoo for you search engine. if this is correct try then with your web browser open click on tools then select internet options from the menu.in the dialogue box that opens down the bottom you will see tabs, click on the settings tab and another box will open called "tabbed browser setting".down the bottom you will see "open links in another program from:". make sure that "a new tab in the current window is checked.then press ok the box will close, press apply and you are done hope this helps.oh and by the way this is not my site i just hang around here when i am bored you can learn a lot from reading some of the interesting post, cheers have a great day.

Hey there good to 'see' you again. You really got it goin' on. And sounds like you're a busy guy.
And I am really thankful that you are taking the time to help me through this..~~big smile~~and thanks!

    Anywayyyy.....
Ok I click on 'Tools'>Internet Options. On the tabs of the Dialog box I have {General{Security{Privacy{Content{Connections{Programs{Advanced
The General tab has from top to bottom..Home Page...Temporary Internet Files ...and....History.
In the Temp Internet Files section there is a place to click>Settings and unfortunately it has nothing to do with 'tabbed browser setting' or anything that I can see that has to do with any kind of 'tab(s)' at all. Aaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh!
I peeky-poo'd at all of the {General{Security{Privacy{Content{Connections{Programs{Advanced stuff and the only place that I found anything that said 'settings' was in the 'General' tab. And like I said ...up higher here, up there, it has nothing to do with tabs.
This is almost dliving me clazee. haha I wish I could remember how it magically got 'fixed' before. I really can't remember if I actually did anything or if it just 'did it all by itself. It has been such a long time ago and there have been so many other things that I've been learning about this 'puter. haha
Once again, it's nice to gifted with you replies......thank you

gday adele it would appear that you are using an older version of internet explorer. the description i gave you was for the interface for ie7 and i was going on what i was reading from my internet options. you should consider updating from version 5 or 6 to version 7 as it is a lot more secure than the older versions i am also presuming you are using windows xp?. to upgrade to version 7 you need to have xp sp2 or higher. anyway i myself never use internet explorer i have always use mozilla firefox i find this browser more user friendly and far more secure.i will have a look around the net and find out how to find the tab settings in the older versions of internet explorer and see if i can help you out.

Hey I really got to thank you for all that you are doing for me. You probably realize by now that I am not computer savvy at all.

Would this be like putting a whole nother system in my 'puter?
And I really have to thank you for your patience for my unfortunate lack of knowledge in this area.
    I won't know if I don't ask ~~wink~~

To agree with iwunderdownunder you should consider using Firefox as a browser. It comes complete with the "tab thingies" option as well as a lot of other nice features. And overall it is a better browser in my opinion. Besides, you can alter it to look how you want it to look and rearrange icons as you see fit, add and remove them as needed and it includes a google toolbar. If i remember correctly you can also add the Yahoo toolbar. http://www.majorgeeks.com/Mozilla_Firefox_d2248.html is the link to the download site, just click on the link if interested in checking it out. You do not have to remove IE and Firefox has an add-on that opens some pages in IE that do not recognize or work with Firefox. Completely free and can be modified in many different ways to suit your needs. Remember, only my opinion that it is a better browser and opinions vary. I apologize that I do not have an answer for your question about IE....I have not used it for a very long time.

    Hey there Mark Trent,
When I had this problem once before...I can't remember how I figured it out to have them back.. So I did what you suggested. And I am running SP1 and would like Sp2.

I'm afraid, very afraid. Is this something that should be done every so often and I just didn't know it? Should I do it to all of them? Is there/could there be something in my Device Manager that others don't have or are all of them the same?
What I am getting at is...I DO NOT want to mess anything up because I'm not being thorough enough. I mean there is allot of stuff there and I am scar-ed. Know what I mean? Do it do it to all of them?
    Thanks lots!!!

Am I going to mess anything up by doing this updating thing? Is it one of those things that should be done every so often anyway?
Do I do it to every single one? Like the mouse one for instance?

And after I do all of this is when I get the ...

So....Do I need to do the updating to every single thing that I have in there?

    Thanks

gday adele i see you are a little confused what mark suggest is fine. now that we have confirmed your operating system lets see what your machine has got.to make sure your computer is compatible with xp sp2.my computer is about 8 years old and i run xp sp3 with no problems.firstly what i need for you to check is how much ram and what your cpu speed is.to do this right click on my computer select properties.in the box under general tab " that's where you found your operating system information" jot down the information that is under the computer section, like mine states" amd athlon tm 1.5ghz 736 meg ram " if you could list this info in your next post it would be very helpful

    Hey Mark Trent,
I did get brave enough and updated everything that was able to update on the Device Manager. And restarted the 'puter. I'm glad I did it. There were a few things on there that really took some time to do so I guess it had needed it for awhile.
Question: How often should I do this?
    Thanks again for the help!

    Hey Mark T.
I waited too long to fix that last message. I did go to that link and couldn't find what you were talking about having to do with downloading SP2.
    So I stopped there.
    I really appreciate your help.

ok kool now that you have your drivers up to date lets get you pc squared away. there is two ways to do this .first option is to turn on automatic update function and let microsoft do the rest.to upgrade to sp2 and sp3 is free providing your copy of windows xp is legit.this will use a lot of download usage so i hope your downloads don't cost to much.i am not to sure how your internet providers work in the u.s here in oz the amount you can download depends on what plan.your best option would be to click start point to all programs at the top of the menu you will see windows update click on it and your internet explorer will take you to the Microsoft update site just follow the prompts there and they will see you through the rest. as you only have sp1 it will probable take several hours to bring you computer up to scratch if you have any other questions just post here and myself or mark will help you out.you should try to keep your computer up to date as there are always important security updates coming from Microsoft and a lot of the software available these days requires a minimum of service pack two to run them.well anyway good luck.p.s my name is tony it would be easier than iwunderdownunder.

    Hey Tony,

Ya, I like that much better. ~smile~
Ok, so here's what I've done. I did get the SP2 installed. I don't know why I had so much trouble with it. (can you tell I'm getting braver?) haha
    Anyway....
When I went to the Tools menu at the top of the page and then down to Internet Options...it looked exactly the same as it did when I just has Sp1. I couldn't find anything anywhere about tabs.
That's all I got for right now....... I'm missing some chickens...gotta go.
    Thanks!

ok great adele ,although all is not over just yet there will be more updates still to go.these can be done either manually or automatically.to make sure your auto update function is set correctly you must right click on my computer and select properties from the menu,in the dialog box that opens choose the automatic update tab, ensure that automatically download and install updates is checked and choose a time that suites you for your computer to perform this function, press apply and close the box, now you are set to update when they become available.you still have some way to go,but right about now would be a good time to run ccleaner both cleaning and registry issues also a defrag of you system will help keep things running smoothly.any more questions you know where to find me.

    Thanks Tony,
All that you have told me is working out very well. ~~smile~~ Yay and whew...finally things are working.

I did the CCleaner and the defrag.
I still have a few questions...

    1) When I turn on my 'puter a window comes up that is...
    Windows Security Alert
    Keep blocking...
    BackWeb-137903
    And the choices below are......
Keep Blocking / Unblock / Ask me Later

I have just been hitting the Ask me Later.
This all has just started recently since I've gotten the sp2
    Any suggestions?

    and

    2) I am also prompted to download
    Internet Explorer 7

aren't there some problems with it? or did they get them all worked out ..and..is it worthy?

I really appreciate all the time, energy and information that you have poured into this.
    Thanks!!

gady adele nice to here that all is running along smoothly.in answer to the backweb security warning.i just had a look on the net in reference to the application and if you are running a hp or compaq computer this is a update function of the manufacturer so it is safe to allow it to access the net so unblock and let it do its thing.as for ie7 its personal preference really i use mozilla firefox when ever i go onto the net but i have ie7 when i want to check on the microsoft update site for any non essential updates as you sometimes can't download some programs from there unless you have internet explorer.ie7 is far more secure than ei5 and ie6.it has more security functions aswell.
just out of curiosity what type of antivirus and firewall do you have installed ?

I disagree with iwunderdownunder. Backweb is foistware, considered by some to be spyware. I do not allow things like my logitech products and HP products to check for updates behind my back. If something isn't working correctly, I will search for updates then. So if it were asking on my computer, I'd would always block it.

    Hey Tony,
Awww man, I went ahead and downloaded IE7. And because that went so well ......and.....there was a prompt to download Mozilla Firefox.....well............I did that too.
It's almost like I'm at the card tables in Reno (Vegas seems too busy to me, and I've only been there twice....but the excitement well what can I say). Anyway, I was feeling 'lucky' for lack of a better word and like I said, I downloaded it.
Now there are so many things at the top of the page that it almost takes up half of the page.
Tomarrow morn I will go through all of the goodies that can tell me everything and anything about what I have done.
    I really hope I didn't get ahead of myself....rrrrr.
Any info from here would be good to know.
I do realize that I can delete it from 'Add and Remove Programs'. But not sure what would really be left in my 'puter anyway. arggg.
    Nity-nite all.

gday, glad to here all is running along smoothly.thanx to plodr for his input regarding backweb. after read his post i researched it some more and there was a lot of different opinions about whether to allow it to run or not,i think it just depends on what you are comfortable with.i myself have never experienced backweb so i should have been more informative about the product.anyway it was a learning experience.i have a lexmark printer that has a similar back to base software that checks regularly for updates and tests the heads for alignment and i allow this to happen save me doing it myself plus i know it will work properly when i need it,but like i said it just depends on what your comfort zones are.i am not to sure on what you mean by goodies???,are these listed in add and remove or are they addons in you mozilla firefox browser ,actually it just hit me when you first install firefox it loads at their addons page.the only ones i use in my browser are adblock plus and noscript i also use their themes to change the look of the browser, some people use more depends on what you need, there is a lot of really good stuff. any way catch up soon.

    Hey Tony,
Well I'm glad that I'm not the only one learning from this thread. ~smile~
What I meant by 'goodies' was all of the 'stuff' that there was on the page when I first downloaded Mozilla Firefox. I couldn't find where or how to personalize the tool bars that were on top of the page.
    So..... I uninstalled. Yep.
My 'puter 'guru' friend said that I could schedule a time when we both were not busy and that he would help me with it.
I think for the most part I am going to just stick with what I already have.
It's one of those things that if it works...don't fix it.
OH!! I did get my tabs back that started this whole thing to begin with.
Sooo, I Thank you Tony and Mark Trent and Comperroruter for the help that has gotten me to this point of running smoothly....and with tabs too. ~wink~
And I especially Thank You Tony for sticking with me the whole entire way. From beginning to end. And....my 'puter is running smoother and more efficiently because of all the things that you suggested I do and did. You made me brave, ~big smile~ and it worked out well.
    I appreciate it all!

Firefox doesn't come with any toolbars. It has Navigation (the icons for forward/back), Address box (type in an url), search box (use the drop down box to pick what you want as your preferred search site) and if you like a bookmark toolbar with your favorite sites showing.

  25. Adele

I was just overwhelmed with all that there was. It doesn't take much to do that to me when it comes to my 'puter. rrrrrrrrr
I'm going to find all the tutorial info on it that I can and then see what I think I can handle.
When I did download it there were allot more things than you mentioned in your reply. Maybe because they were all sprawled out or something. I couldn't figure out how to 'trim' up the rows of all the things that it had.

gday adele there are allot of other programs that have addons that may have been already installed on your computer that will automatically add tool bars to Mozilla Firefox when you first install the program.some examples are ccleaner adds the yahoo toolbar if you don't uncheck the box when you install the software, avg 8.0 also has a safe search bar, zonealarm firewall adds a search bar and there are probably many more that i haven't mentioned.you can uninstall or disable these addons by opening Firefox click on tools from the drop down menu select addons, then in the box that appears select the extensions tab and all of the toolbar addons will be list in there just uninstall or disable them from there.
some tool bars can also be uninstalled via the add and remove programs list like yahoo so check in there and remove the ones you don't need. good luck and have a great day Tony
