We have had this idea banded around the UK too, we do have car insurance that is drive by mile and now with London having a city congestion charge, other cities are concidering this, Manchester nixed it a few months back which is good as many other UK cities are not in the same class as London and having a charge would kill retail business.

Pay per Mile...... UK different to USA as we dont need in the majority to drive massive distances in reality to you folk in thr USA so this wouldnt be too much of a hardship, so long as all the other taxes for road travel and the massive tax on gas is dropped.

In theory is sounds feasible but in practice would be a nightmare for the transport industry,Buses, taxis, trucks, would be made un economic due to their high mileage per year and the prices involved would have to rise to a level that would be prohibitive.

I'm just curious Halo, what is a 'congestion charge?' How is it implemented? Is it just a flat rate if you drive, or live in London? I've just never heard that phrase before and it peaked my curiosity:confused

I see Bill added the TFL link for you on this, I dont live in London but occasionally like this week do work their and luckily for me I use the train and tube system to get around London, but if you where to commute and work in London alot then this adds to your daily expenses as in you need to pay for car, insurance, road tax, petrol, MOT possibly, parking, mainanence and then this basically a drive in to city tax on top!

No getting away from this charge as their are cameras all over the boundary for the congestion charge area, busses etc are exempt, not that London city is any less congested mind!

@Bill, would imagine that in UK if this type of pay per drive was introduced that some exemptions would be in force like busses, taxis and retail wagons, likely just target the general motorist..... dont think it will happen soon but its something that they are concidering here as we do have a few pay for roadways now.

It would be a way to force people toward public transportation (if there were a decent system) No one seems to work in the same area they live anymore.
Even though the insurance has that method installed in policies they have a minimum limit. If you only drive 0 miles a year they make you pick 500 at least.

They tried to impliment this back home? when?

I don't think the UK is struggling for road build/repair money since the last I read car tax brings in something like 30billion per year and only 200 million is actually spent on the roads. Petrol prices are bad though, moving to canada that was one of the first things I noticed......in actual fact pretty much everything here is the same price in the figure....the difference is here it's a $ sign and not a pound sign.

But then again there's a reason the UK is known as "Rip of Island"

1 pound 30 per mile? what in gods name?

Man that place just gets worse by the day. I find it very sad to watch a great nation sink.
They keep talking about too many cars on the road etc...the funny thing is they know how to drop the traffic, but instead they try to punish. A bit like the anti smoking thing "We'll raise the price of ciggerettes so people will stop smoking" 18 months later "We have a serious smuggling problem"
Even cutting out road tax and dropping the price of petrol wouldn't level a pay per mile scheme if they make it that pricey.

The UK is overflowing, ready to burst at the seems, immigration is where the solution lies.Tighter laws.

Did you know that Britain (not including Ireland) fits into the Province of Ontario nearly 7 times in terms of land mass, the Population of Britain is what? 65mil?...the population of all of Canada is only 35mil.
there's lots of room here LOL

How can I get into Canada without a trade, no relatives there and not relying on Fred G to take me during his occupation. I am serious.

Seriously? With great difficulty. I came here to be with my girl who is a Canadian citizen from birth. I'm english with no criminal background and am a qualified carpenter and I have been proccessing for nearly 2.5 years, I'm nearly there but it's cost me everything I owned and a whole lot more.

    For info go here... http://www.cic.gc.ca/

There's loopholes to help you but you want a good lawyer/consultant, I have a consultant dealing with mine, he worked for immigration for 28 years so he knows the loops....also about half the price of a lawyer.

If you really are serious and want to know things but can't find them on the site, PM me, I probably know or know how to find out.

:-D My propaganda campaign is working I see.

On topic, that is just a STUPID idea. A gas tax taxes you a % on the fuel you buy. This mileage tax... How many government workers would it take to collect the info and taxes...

It looks like our 'beloved electees' are just NOT going to let this idea die! http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090227/ap_on_go_ot/mileage_tax The article brought up a valid point. IF this implemented, what would be the incentive to drive more fuel efficient cars and not gas guzzlers since they'll all be taxed the same? The proposal is 1/4 cent per mile.

Exactly what I was thinking unless its just a bonus tax on top of everything else, they are the best ones:-D Like our congestion charge.

The should put a message at the bottom of these extra taxes 'This is a Bonus tax,non of your statutory taxes will be affected'

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but just an update to let you know I don't think I stand a snowball's chance in hell of relocating to Canada in the near future. At present I don't have the necessary funds to relocate (am now on a three day week and savings are dwindling fast.) Also, from what I can gather, taxes are pretty much higher over there than here and I would also need to have a prospective employer, anyway. Everything is against the move. I never say never, though.

Thanks Nedlamar. I'm still keen on it, though. Considering going to college when things improve to study IT. Could be my passport outta this place.
It's a strain on the brain living close to the brink.
