Tascam 2488 hdd problem

Hi all my 'Rock God' recently bought a Tascam 2488, when he tried to use it he got the error message ''Cannot Boot. Not detect HDD correctly. Power Off and check H/W

He's a musician not a bit 'techy' and needs help. I've trawled the net for solutions which seem to be from a cable to a new hdd, this maybe in the wrong forum, forgive me, but if anyone could throw any light on how to fix this I'd be very grateful.

He has contacted Tascam, but they want it sent abroad, we're in the UK. This machine had (apparently) been stored under a bed for some time and was packed very well for transit (bought off Ebay)
