Task Manager and Shutdown issues for XP

On many occasions i will have a program open, eg Winamp, and when i close this program it visually disappeers, but when i open the taskmanager and select the processes tab the application is still running. This then leads to the issue of windows not shutting down. I will select shut down and windows will end my antivirus software but will not shutdown, it seems to be frozen in the processes of shuting down, however i can still move the mouse and browse through folders, but i cannot run any applications.

Download this registry key and merge with your system.It will set a value to autokill apps and services when shutdown is initiated.

Also did you have any answer for the task manager issue, since i end the process but it is still there, it wont remove itselft from the processes in the task manager

 

Maybe winamp is actually getting minimised to the tray at the bottom right.These app run in the tray.Maybe there is a setting in winamp to change this.Also your startup programs may need configuration.

 

No that is not the problem, it is very weird, i dont have winamp on startup and it isnt minimising to the tray, and this issue occurs with most programs they just seem to be running in the background even after they have been closed and even after i end the process manually

 

Try sfc /scannow

Also download process explorer http://www.majorgeeks.com/Process_Explorer_d4566.html as it can do what the taskmanager can do without using windows api.

 

No use, the registery value you gave me before seems to have caused more issues, now when i open certain folders on my second hdd explorer crashes, and the error report from microsoft tells me that its a virus, however my computer is clean since i scanned it with both my own and micrsofts software, i dont have SP2 and it was recommended, any other suggestions??

I have norton 2005, spy sweeper, and no adware, they are all updated and i havnt found anything, and i also used a tool from microsoft which didnt detect anything
