    Hi all,

I got a nasty infection on my pc (Win XP Pro, fully updated) a few days ago. So I followed the Read Me First procedures & found I had virtumonde & several other viruses. Everything was going well & the computer seemed to be pretty much cured. Then I started running ComboFix. I wasn't able to turn off my McCafee program though, so I just ran it while McCafee was still on. It seemed to go fine and I was watching the scan in process when suddenly everything behind the window (in other words my entire desktop & icons & taskbar) started to disappear. I think the scan finished but my icons & taksbar & everything never reappeared. Only the background design remained.

I restarted the computer & it went smoothly, with one huge exeption - there's nothing there except the background! No task bar, no icons. Right clicking doesn't do anything, nor does trying to pull up the start menu with the keyboard. I am able to get the task manager up but it doesn't show much, just the usual stuff. I restarted in safe mode & it's the same thing. No task bar, no icons.

I can't get to the logs that were created when I did all the Red Me First scans, otherwise I would attach them to this post. FYI I've followed the Read Me First procedures many times over the past few years for various computers & I know how to do it... I never skip anything.

Basically I want to know this: how do I get my desktop/taskbar back?

    Thanks in advance,
    Megan

Ummm yeah well I feel a little dumb now... I realized explorere.exe wasn't running so I had task manager run it & everything's fine now. :)

    Thanks anyway!

If you had the infections that you mentioned, you really should complete all of the instructions in the READ & RUN ME and attach the logs that were requested. There is a good chance you are still infected.

Ok thank you for the advice, I will do that later this morning. And you're right, I am still having some issues.

Ok here are my log files. FYI I was unable to disable McAfee while running ComboFix.

By the way right now I'm having 2 problems with my computer that seem to be from this infection... One is that webpages are loading very slowly (although no popups like before.) The other is that when I restart my computer, the desktop is still blank except for the background design, so I have to manually start explorer.exe.

Oh and one more minor thing, I did remove several old Java things per the instructions, but 3 of the oldest ones wouldn't let me remove them.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
My Way Search Assistant <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [4899f4b4] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\yqlvhrrk.dll",b
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_06\bin\jusched.exe"
    O9 - Extra button: MUSICMATCH MX Web Player - {d81ca86b-ef63-42af-bee3-4502d9a03c2d} - http://wwws.musicmatch.com/mmz/openWebRadio.html (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

If this problem is still occurring, in Internet Explorer click Tools, Manage Add-ons and disable all the add-ons. Does this make things better? If so, enable them one at a time to see which one may be slowing you down. If disabling all of them does not change anything, then jsut re-enable all of them.

Thank you for your help, chaslang.

I did everything you instructed. Here are some notes:

The 3 J2SE Runtime Environments you asked me to delete will not let me remove them. They say "Fatal Error During Installation" when I try to remove them. I was able to remove Viewpoint Media Player but My Way Search Assistant would not let me remove it. It gave me RUNDLL Error - something about the specified module could not be found.

The Fixme.reg gave me a notice that it was successful.

My computer seems to be working fine at this point!

I've attached the 2 logs you requested. :)

    You're welcome.

See if you can use this Your Uninstaller! 2008 to uninstall them.

    Your logs are otherwise clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u
        • Notes: The space between the cf" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\cf folder from combofix.
    2. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    3. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    4. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi it's me again...

My computer seems to be virus-free but I'm having a problem that developed while I was fighting the viruses as described in this thread. Internet Explorer only opens about every 4th time I click on the link to open it.

I see in Task Manager that IEXPLORE.EXE opens a new process every time I click to open IE, but the IE window never appears. Then when I go to shut down the computer later, screens pop up telling me that the computer can't shut down because it's waiting for IEXPLORE.EXE to close. I get several of those windows & I always choose to "end the program myself."

Is this related to the fixes I performed or the viruses? Or should I be posting this on another forum?

    Thanks!

Based on the malware that you had, I tend to doubt it is related. We fix dozens of these per week and this particular problem with IE has never come up. It may be due to some other piece of software you are running or even a problem within Windows. I suggest first run the below just to be on the safe side, and if it finds nothing, post in the Software Forum.

First run System File Checker, follow these steps: 1.Click Start, click Run type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER. 2.Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process. 3.Restart the computer when System File Checker process is complete.

If still having a proplem run Running GMER to detect rootkits and then attach the GMER log.

You may also want to see this http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q318378 which explains how IE6 can be reinstalled and repaired when you don't wish to install IE7.

Well it seems the problem with IE has been fixed after running the file check & GMER.

    Thanks again chaslang! :major

GMER does not fix anything on its own so it must have been SFC.
