taskbar icon removal

I think that this is the correct term. In the area just to the left of my clock, on the lower right hand corner of my screen, I would like to remove many of these items. There are about 15 icons currently, and each runs its course at start-up, making for a lenghty start. I'm sure that this is a simple task, but I can not figure it out . I am running XP home.

Can you give us a list of the icon's names? That will make it easier to help you. Also, do you want the programs to NOT start at start-up or do you just not want to see the icon in the system tray?

 

If there are programs that you do not want to start automatically when your computer starts, go to Start-->Run-->type in "MSCONFIG" (minus the quotes), click on the start-up tab and unclick whichever programs you do not want to start automatically.

I am at work so I do not have XP in front of me, but to change which icons are visible on the system tray, right click on an empty part of the bar, and you will be able to change which icons are seen or not.

 

I see where I can remove using msconfig. Are there any items that I should not remove that are part of a normal start-up? I tried to copy the list, but I can not. On about half of the items, I can figure out what they are, but some I can not.

Let me know if I can get myself into a mess removing any items, or if this is pretty fool-proof.

If you use a program such as Startup Inspector or Autoruns you can get a better idea of what those items are.

 

It depends on your operating system.

If you are unsure, post a screenshot or summary of the list.

 

I am unable to copy the startup screen in msconfig. Any ideas?

 

You can either do a screenshot, or download AutoRuns and save the log as a text file, then post as an attachment.
