TCC Issues on Cavaliers

Has anyone else had any problems with the TCC on the Cavalier? If so, what and how was the problem solved?

 

Don't know how this is going to work out. I installed a lighted switch in between the plug that attaches to the auto tansaxle and the ECM. I drove the car today with the TCC unplugged and the transaxle shifted fine through all three gears. Stopped the car, check the plug to see if there is voltage present and there was. Plugged the electrical connector into the other end on the transaxle, put the car in Drive and the engine quit. Stalled out the engine. Unplugged the TCC, started up the car, put it back in drive and drove home without a hitch.

So it seems to me the ECM (engine control module) is hanging up keeping the TCC (torque converter clutch) solenoid energized. Quite similar to a car with a manual transaxle and you do not push in the clutch pedal while slowing the car down. But my 1994 Cavalier has an automatic transaxle.

My hope is to disconnect the power going to the TCC solenoid via the inside switch. Then when I get back up to speed (about 45 mph), flip the switch on and energize the TCC solenoid allowing the engine to run at a slower speed to increase the mpg's. Without the TCC, my Cavalier isn't getting any better mpg than my 2001 2WD Ranger pickup - which is 26 mpg. The Cavalier should get at least in the lower 30's with the 2.2L inline 4 TBI.

Sure is a heck allot better to drive that car being front wheel drive than that Ranger is on these icy slick snow covered roads.
