TCP/IP problems, and maybe PPP

I don't really know what those abbreviations mean (in thread title) but I know enough that those things are keeping me from getting on the internet. I use dial up internet (juno), and wireless LAN on campus. And no where, now how can I use IM or go to websites. I ran a virus scan with Norton, updated a week ago or less. I ran spyware check with spybot, but it is updated to only look for 13K bots, not 20K like it does now. This is a new-used IBM thinkpad 600x. I am using my old thinkpad 600 to get onto the internet. I've had the new-used laptop for less than 2 weeks. Originally, I could not logon to the campus network, but i reinstalled the driver for my 3com wireless card, and now I can connect, but no internet. The same is true for juno--i can dial to the central computers, but no internet. I am not using the Windows XP firewall.

I tried repairing windows, and it was no help. Now I can not use the infrared port either, I can not set it up to revieve incomming connections as it did before. The error box said something about a router.

I've tried installing simple TCP/IP services, but this takes "longer than the time alotted". I also tried intalling all networking services, and some other componants, and same thing.,

Someone suggested that my TCP/IP thing might need to be reinstalled because it is corrupt.

I'm backing up my files, because i might just wipe the hard drive and start over.

I tried the LSP fix, nothing happened. I clicked finished, and it repaired nothing.

Thank you Kodo, the winsock program worked. Can you explain what happened in terms I can understand. Did something mess with my winsock? What does it do? Why did you have me use the LSP program first? What did LSP do exactly? I hope to understand what I've done to my OS.

Is there an article you can link me to?

Sometimes nasties leave behind registry entries that affect the winsock. The LSP fix should fix those entries. Since I'm not sure what happened when you ran the LSP fix I can't say for sure if it was user error or that it just didn't work. The second program actually repairs the winsock itself by using netsh to reset TCP/IP.

So yes, something messed with your winsock, usually a dialer trojan. If the problem persists, follow this thread.
