Temp file issue

XP Pro, SP3, current updates, Comodo, A^2, Lenovo T60p Dual CPU - 2.1 ghz, 15.6" screen, 3 Gb computer memory, 3 cent operator memory

I, again, find the following statement on an XP malware instructions page I was re-reading.

"Malware hides in Temp folders and standard cleaning practices will delete everything from Temp folders."

Surely everyone here knows that some developers are putting permanent stuff in temp folders for some ungodly reason. This is a simple fact users have to deal with. I've had some problems from cleaners deleting temp files and/or folders that took me days to fix.

Can you tell us anything helpful about this?

The only thing we can tell you about this is that whoever is doing it does not understand good programming practices nor do they understand the meaning of the word "temp".

Storing unnecessary files here for temporary purposes is fine. That is the normal practice. If some programs you use are storing important files here that when deleted cause the program not to function properly then you need to complain to the developer. They should not store necessary files in temp folders, and if they were writing their programs properly, they would even clean up their own temp files when the program terminates.

During normal Windows operation, files that are in the temporary folder that are currently in use by some program, will not get removed using any simple file/disk cleaning program. Nor will they get removed if you try to remove them manually. Windows File Protection will stop you. But special malware cleaning tools, like ComboFix, Avenger, OTL, and others can empty the temp folders during startup before Windows and other programs have fully loaded.

Thanks. What you say is, of course, the very reason for my query. And, as I expected, the only answer is suck it up. The programs do what they do.

Apparently Firefox puts user configurations in temp files. Others do this or that. Developers in general take great pains to avoid direct contact with users, switching you a forum, the members of which are powerless, so it's impossible to even complain. And the cleaners roll on...

You're welcome. I don't know of any user information that Firefox stores in temp files. I never had a probem with Firefox losing any configuration information after cleaning up temp folders. And did you mean temp files as in files with a .tmp extension ? Or did you mean that Firefox stores user information in files that are saved in one of Windows temp folders. Folders like below are the more well known temp folders.

    C:\Windows\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\useraccount\Local Settings\Temp
    C:\users\useraccount\AppData\Local\Temp

I don't know the difference between tmp and temp or tem.

Since everybody was saying use CCleaner I did. Firefox was immediately taken back PAST reset conditions to a configuration I had never seen in all my years around forms of Mozilla.

Beyond that I refer to the 3 cent memory noted in my OP. :confused

Since no one else really has this issue ( if they did we would here about it all the time ), it would seem you either do not have Firefox installed in the normal location, or you have made some setting changes to CCleaner that are removing some additional information that you may not want it to do. I really don't know of any options in Ccleaner that would remove Firefox user information. Only stuff like cookies, history, temporary internet browsing stuff, etc. But no user config stuff would be removed.

I suggest that you load CCleaner and on the Utilities tab, make sure your Firefox settings are like below:

    CC_FF.jpg

If you don't want to remove your history, you can uncheck those too.
