I made little comment here as to my thoughts on the situation beyond recommending looking at the science and doing as much research as possible before passing judgement, lest it turn out to be wind one was passing instead.

I am finding myself shocked but not surprised at the lack of response to the autopsy results, all those people shouting loudest seem to have gone quiet. (I don't mean here :) ).

We can, however, rely on Randall Terry who seems to have no difficulty whatsoever conflating self righteous with self aware. I very rarely say anything like this but that man is an abomination (sic).

I refer you to the title of the thread.

I respect your opinion and would fight to the death for your right to hold it.

It is now time for the science to speak.

I would prefer it if this thread did not concentrate on people reiterating their emotionally derived opinons.

I am looking for a discussion of the phenomenon of 'Public Hysteria' receding into invisibility after the emergence of rational evidence discredits the emotional response.

I offer this thought, it reminds me of the old saying that 'Victory has a thousand fathers but defeat is an orphan'. Discuss :)

D3, I just realised I may have been unintentionally rude there, my apologies it was inadvertent.

That's what I meant by I may have been inadvertently rude :)

My reply was actually general but it occurred to me after I'd posted, (of course), that the way I worded it may have appeared particular. My apologies.

I'm trying to get a thread going on the 'Bandwagon Phenomenon', harmless fun really as we seem to have so much of it going on. ;)

I enjoy your presence around here D3 so would not want to be discourteous unintentionally.;) :D

I honestly think that you will find that alot of those out there that protest, no matter what the cause, or what side of the fence they are on....simply do it for something to do!!!!!! Usually those are the kinds of people that itch for attention, so they'll jump on the bandwagon, whether it be for one side or the other!! Then after that issue comes to a standstill...they'll move on to the next one, and you won't hear about them anymore!!!! I really can't figure out if they are hoping for their 15 minutes of fame or if they really are just bored of sitting at home with nothing to do!!!!!?????

Hmmmm, Where is Tom DeLay lately?

I'm sure he will be staying off this issue and out of the spotlight amid his lobbyist controversy.

Excellent points raised there, just what I was hoping for.

Interesting though isn't it Roger; the leap to bandwagon almost implies a leap to fai*cough*, move along now, nothing to see here.

hey krazykrl, you know perfectly well that Tom will be wherever prosecutors can be Delayed.

Out of the limelight and into the spotlight ;) :D

I hate American Media. That's all I have to say about the Schiavo story and how it was in everyones face.

I'm sure the story isn't over. But I'm glad the autopsy turned out the way it did. If the woman seemed to have full mental capacities, what a tregedy that someone had to live like that for so long. I'm glad it appears she didn't know what was going on. I don't care about her husband and the family really - it's just good news to me that she probably spent that time in a deep vegetative state.

if i'm not mistaken didn't the autopsy report that she was blind as well?

supposedly... but the schiavo's plan on challenging that theory

I understand that the idea of protesting is to convince someone to change their way of thinking and agree with you, but could you imagine...if you took all the energy used to protest, and put it towards something that is more useful...could you imagine the things that could be accomplished!!!!????

For example....do you honestly believe that all those people protesting for or against Schiavo influenced the courts ruling?? I'm going to say no!! So we take all those people and use their efforts to raise awarenessof kids in need in this country...they would of accomplished something positive, and possibly helped someone in the meantime!! But that isn't interesting, and the media isn't going to eat it up!! Unfortunately, we all know that the human species thrives on controversy, so therefore they all stand in front of tv cameras and scream their heads off, then go home and look for something else to get attention from!! What is really sick is when those adults get their children involved and most of them aren't even old enough to form their own opinion or even care for that matter!!

Back to the bloodsucking media....if those people weren't protesting, then, odds are, the media wouldn't have covered it so much, which in turn, wouldn't have brought out soooo many attention hungry loudmouths!! It's just a vicious circle, thanks to the media!!

By the way...where was the great activist, Rev. Jesse Jackson?? Oh i'm sorry....It wasn't one of "his people" in trouble with the law!! (NOT TRYING START A RACIAL ISSUE HERE BY THE WAY!!!) but there seems to be a suspicious pattern with him, as long as we are talking about protesters!!

Then again...if you want to talk about the industrial side of it....I guess protesting is a good way to keep the poster board manufacturers in business!! :D

I love to get on my soap box!!!!

Actually, the science didn't have all that much to say. The autopsy didn't find any evidence of abuse, good for hubby, but it also didn't find any evidence of an eating disorder, nor of a heart attack, which was the long touted excuse for her original collapse. And heart attacks leave permanent scarring that would have been clearly evident years later. Autopsies are great for establishing a cause of death, and for noting conditions at or near death, and good for things that leave long term tracks, but there are severe limits to what they can tell you about what happened years ago. About the only thing that the autopsy "proved" was that she was severly brain damaged, which we knew from the beginning.

Lot of truth there. Bandwagon jumpers are often spur of the moment, there for the emotion, frequently doing things, right or wrong, for insufficient reasons. Gone when the shouting stops.

Then there are the permanent players that are chipping away whether the press is watching or not. On one side are those that are pushing for eventual involuntary killing of those that they deem useless, like Pete Singer from Princeton University. On the other side are those that are trying to hold the line against the ever creeping acceptance of what's sufficient excuse to kill the useless. "She was never going to get any better" didn't use to be sufficient argument for killing an invalid, but it's becoming a more and more common excuse in everyday rhetoric. "Death with dignity" for years has assumed that only a person's clearly stated wishes were enough to allow removal of a feeding tube, which was NOT considered "life support" until very recently, which has caused endless legal battles in a lot of cases. Very inconvenient. And there was no clear statement from Teri.

Of course, "very inconvenient" was the excuse Germany used to start killing what they more frankly termed "useless eaters" in the 1930s. We get slowly closer every year, and the permanent players keep on going....

The definition of legal blindness does not necessarily mean PROFOUND blindness. While legal blindness may mean one couldn`t drive...for instance...one may still be able to see light and shapes. Personally I think the point in this case is moot. I think that while the whole situation is sad...any time a loved one is incapacitated it`s bad...the real question is quality of life.

The media circus around the Terry Schiavo case enrages me more than anything else. Many such people lay dying slowly, with inadequate care all over the USA, and are ignored.

My parents wishes re: end of life are well known to me, and in writing, and I will respect their decisions. My sister said she would not, regardless of their wishes, because her personal beliefs conflict with theirs. I hope our family does not end up in the news, as I would go to court to have my parents decisions followed, regardless of my beliefs. Your end of life decisions are the last, most important decision you can make, and should be honored, as long as you are mentally competent when such decisons were made.

My online living will.... you are now my witnesses. I would not like to be kept alive in a coma for more than 1 year unless serious progress is being made. I can't imagine living for 15 years or whatever under a coma... aware or not, that is just not right in my opinion. I'd rather make my peaceful way to my maker.

Noted. But Terri Schiavo wasn't in a coma, she was brain damaged but awake.

According to what they say...sounds like you might as well call it an awaken coma!!
