    Hello:
I'm replacing a dc jack on a Dell Inspiron 1150 (don't freak out, I've replaced several of these). My question is it possible/advisable to test the repair by plugging in the motherboard to ac power before I reassemble the laptop? Basically I would just see if the power light comes on. I've been hesitant to do this previously, I didn't know if this could potentially cause a problem or not prior to the laptop being completely reassembled.
    Thanks.

I think it would be ok as long as you place it on a non static surface. People do this with desktop motherboards so I don't see why it would cause a problem for a laptop motherboard. Just make sure the place is static free.

Also make sure the surface is non-conductive otherwise you could short out some pathways, so an antistatic mat is out unfortunately.

If you have a spare foam thingy that desktop motherboards are shipped on that may work.

Ok, thanks for the replys. I'll give it a try.
