What speed DSL are you paying for, dependednt on ISP they do have packages ranging from 256kb 512kb, 650kb, 1mb and so on.

Try a few other Speed Tests to get an average result, also your firewall can cause lower results so for the duration of the test turn it off and only have the test page open only. Yo will also find because of overheads you will not gain the full advertised speed, you may connect at the proper speed but you may have about 20% less speed on tests.

In get 1.5mbps comcast says they are at 6mbps!!! maybe it's because I am over a wireless b conenction but I am getting an 86% signal strength and it is supposed to support 11mbps, I am only networked with 1 wired computer. the router and PC are about 20 feet apart. I am using a linksys BEFW11S4 broadband router, it is un encrypted and from what I can tell it doesn't seem like anyoen is stealing bandwidth, is there a program that will let me monitor bandwidth? and not just what my PC is using but like whatever the router is sending and recieving.

Speed tests are poor indicators of performance, usually because they are flooded, or halfway across the country.

Needless to say, 802.11b wireless actually bottlenecks your connection, even if you had full signal strength. 802.11b only gets about 4-5Mbps.

I keep trying to convince my parents to get vonage, it comes with a nearly free router after rebates and it is a linksys wireless g. my stupid parents pay quest $50 a month+long distance for phone service:mad:

Not to mention any overheads incurred by security like WPA (WEP is hardware based so shouldn't cause much added overhead).

I'm too embarrassed to do a speed test.

I already know it. Pathetic 1.5 Mbps throttled to 512 Kbps. :(

Then throttled to 28.8 Kbps if I download more than 1GB!

Actually, WPA is supposed to have less overhead than WEP, in at least in conjunction with 802.11g. :D

Would anyone know of a Netgear VPN router setting that would prevent uploading? Just had to reconfigure my connection and can't upload or send email.

    Thanks for any help.

Using Broadstar, no "tweaking", LinkSys switch (sharing with roommate), school campus T3:

What's strange is this switch has a higher upload, while the Dynex one I was using before had a higher download. Either way, apparently there are a lot of people on the connection right now to make it this slow (advertised as 100MBPS). :p
