I sit here with my heart breaking as it has been since last Friday when I received news that my uncle had taken ill. I received the dreaded call shortly before the start of the super bowl that he had passed away.

He was a wonderful man, my favorite uncle out of the many I have. He always had a twinkle in his eye, a devilish smile and every time he gave me one of his infamous hugs and said I love you I knew he meant it with all his heart. It was his way.

I saw another side of him last year when my mom had her stroke that endeared him even more to me. He was sitting there in her room with that proverbial sparkle in his eye...cracking jokes, trying to get her to laugh or smile. She was in a lot of pain and couldn't communicate very well. He managed to make her smile and her eyes sparkle with his antics. It was a joy to see and made us all smile. Then he would give her a kiss and hug, say his I love yous and goodbyes then walk out of the room where he would promptly burst into tears for having seen his sister so ill. This process was repeated every time he went to see her.

He was an amazing man and I am so saddened by his loss. He touched my heart in so many ways. As far back as I can remember he always lit up a room when he entered and you knew you'd be smiling or laughing before long..and that when it was time for him to go that you'd wish he could stay a little longer.:)

I just got off the phone with some members of my family who called so that I could share in the celebration of Uncle Denny's life. I am so touched I don't have the words to express the depth of what I'm feeling right now. Circumstances wouldn't allow for me to fly to NY right now I am so grateful to my family for taking the time to call me from that noisy room so I could hear the familiar sound of the family 'clan' all talking at once. Wow! Some things never change! LOL

Uncle Denny, I love you and you'll always be in my heart.

That seems to sum up the feelings about one such as him. And more pointedly so when it's time for the final departure. Those that do the most, help the most, love the most, are the most difficult and painful to let go of. But they are also the ones that have left the most cherished and valuable memories and feelings, and while it hurts more to lose them, life would have been so much less without them. It's one of life's bitterest ironies that those that love and help us the most in life, hurt us the most in death. Not their fault, obviously, but true nonetheless.

Abby, you and your family will be in my prayers during this difficult time. You've dealt with enough grief that I'm confident you'll pull through this one OK, but I know you've got to be hurting right now. God bless you all.

It's very hard to have someone taken from you when you know that there isn't another person that could ever fill that void. From your post ... he was a very good man with the ability to show love, affection and a playful side. I hope the pain will ease for you soon and that you can remember him with a smile on your face and love in your heart yet absent of the hurt.

Abby, my heart goes out to you right now (as always). You know how much you mean to all of us ---- some more than others.

Always realize, there are many here who would LOVE to be considered a "Dutch Uncle"

Loosing someone that is close to you, and has been a positive part of your life, is always a very difficult time. It is as though literally, a part of you dies with them. But the other side of the coin is that a part of them is always alive, in their decedents, in their deeds, and in the minds and hearts of those that knew them. The irreversible passing on of the beloved is one of the hardest things to come to grips with, in the roller coaster of life.

May I offer you my heartfelt condolences in these tough times ahead. My my prayers and good thoughts, along with many others are with you in these sad times. Life is a difficult journey, but at least you don't have to do it alone.

To live life with love, and to be loved long after you've lived it. One couldn't really ask for more. Enough said.

    Sorry for your loss AbbySue.

Cherish the time you had together. You were both very lucky for having that relationship.

5 mins with my pathetic family makes me envious.

I'm sorry to hear this Abby, it's tough losing a loved one, especially one that was close to you. The only thing I've found that helps is thinking of the good times you shared with each other :)

Sorry for your loss AbbySue. I don't have a relative like that, mine are all regular. After reading what you wrote about him, I feel I'm missing out. Keep him with you.
