I visited yesterday to research this major annoyance after it suddenly popped up on one of my PCs, and a quick search led to the sticky which had just been posted earlier that day. Is this a new problem?

Well, the procedure worked, but I am more concerned with how I got infected in the first place.

Coincidentally (?) I had just run Windows Update prior to a reboot which i had not done in a week, and immediately upon reboot the nightmare began. I don't know how I got infected, but I am very suspicious of the update.

This happened on an XP box running Avast AV and XP FW, which I will change to Sygate FW (like I have on my Win2K boxes).

Spyware Quake is gone for now, THANK YOU. I hope it does not recur.

    Aiko

    You're welcome!

Yes Spyware Quake is relatively new.

How and where you got infected only you can answer. It came from some site you or someone else visited and perhaps something that was clicked on or downloaded.

You should make sure you follow the guidelines in: How to Protect yourself from malware!
