Sometime in September we started noticing our system getting sluggish. Our standard proceedure of Spybot, Adaware, and McAfee seemed to help but not cure, as had always been the case before. We muddled thru for the next week or so trying different things, all to no avail. Finally, we admitted defeat and contacted this MG forum. With your guideance, and patience we proceeded along a procedure of deep cleaning. Things were much better but opening of programs such as AutoCAD, Quickbooks, MS Word, Outlook Express, etc were taking much longer then usual. Six more weeks of additional cleaning and more newsgroup help did nothing to better our situ and openings seemed to be getting more sluggish. Last week, we finally emailed McAfee for help. McAfee was the only thing that had not been considered in this problem. Yesterday an email was received from McAfee. Instead of answering the question we asked, they offered a cleaning procedure. After going thru their cleaning procedure our system was just as slow and sluggish as before. After struggling thru the past couple of months with a sluggish system and spending untold hundreds of hours locating, downloading, and running cleaning programs, and the final, distasteful step of wiping the disc and starting over from scratch was beginning to loom quite ominously overhead, we finally received an answer from McAfee - that didn't even address our question. Talk about frustration overload! At that point we simply uninstalled McAfee and tested our system - PROBLEM SOLVED!!! Apparently it was McAfee that was trashing our system all this time. You surely guessed McAfee was not reinstalled. We decided to give Norton a whirl this time. The evidence seems quite compelling that McAfee and our system were not compatible. Perhaps if we had not thought of McAfee as untouchable we would have pursued that avenue long ago, and consequently solved our problem long ago. Thank You Everyone, for all your patience and help. K.

    Agreed!

And Kay thanks for the update! Problems like this with McAfee (and not to scare you...also Symantec) are the reasons why we do not really recommend them to everyone. See the info in step 2 of How to Protect yourself from malware!

Some people with very fast PCs and lots of memory experience fewer problems than others. But these tools (especially their full blown security suites) are just getting out of hand with how many processes must be running and how much of you system CPU power they require.
