    What is thanksgiving for?

As an englishman i have often wondered but never asked.

If it is a non religious celibration i like the idea of that .
I do like the idea of not having to worry about religious bull and have a nice day to appreciate one another no matter what race or religion without being told how evil everything is.

It is celebrated, at least here in the states, as more of a day of appreciating what you have than as a religious observance, but its origins are firmly documented.

Most holidays are based on some sort of religious occurance, thus the "holi" in the word.

Your country or ours? If something annoys you, ignore it; it's not that difficult to do. If you let everything that annoys you get to you, life won't be much fun.

That's what it is funky munky. While the roots of the holiday are religious, and those that ARE religious tend to keep that aspect alive, there is certainly no pressure to incorporate anything religious into YOUR holiday. Macy's parade, football, good food, and friends getting together don't require any religious thoughts. You can choose to be thankful, or not, in any way that suits you.

History is what it is, and most of our history was shaped by Christians, so God and Christianity figure into our history heavily. If you'd been raised in Syria your history and traditions would be entirely different, but still full of religious references. At least here there is no pressure to adhere to those religious traditions. ;)

In England? I don't think so! Although seen to be a Christian country, today, it is far from a practising Christian country. The Christian voice is very quiet...people don't openly declare thair faith anywhere near that of other countries who claim to be based on these beliefs IMHO :)

In Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving at the beginning of October because we're farther north. Just thought I'd throw that in.
