Geez, I hate to hear that

I've been using AVG (free) for about 8 months(just downloaded the latest version) and I havn't had any problems, but I haven't had to fix anything with it either

Are you sure because your word carries a lot of weight

If your sure, can you suggest another?

The owners here use it and over 300,000 have downloaded it. I will assume that was meant as a joke bailmeout, or you simply forgot to add a ;) to your note.

Reminds me of my buddy who needs his computer fixed a lot, so I tell him to stop going to porn sites. He says he does not. I find cookies that says he does. Hell, once he broke it before I could get home.

For anyone who missed it, we get about 3 emails a week claiming we infected them and they are always wrong. This is just one of those emails for your entertainment.

    No not a joke :p
It just didnt fulfill my needs.
Kaspersky is one of the best av's around. Not free ofcourse and updated weekly.
Black ice is firewall or av I've kind of forgotten? Either way it's meant to be good.
As for me I just use the crappy nortons suite (all in one) only because I like the look of it. However everything else is patched up and I found out that closing port 1025 and a few others does help a little as well. Besides alot of routers/cable modems have firewalls. How good they are? Errrr that's all I will say... tsk tsk. Alot of av's find the virus but don't completely get rid of it.
    Just my personal opionions anyway.
As for *pron* sites.............. I will keep quiet about it :)

    Some of my thoughts:

AVG Free is an excellent free choice. Its protected us well here for years. Downside is that the update system gets bogged down.

Frankly, I always thought NOD32 is one of the better, but its not free and I didnt think it was as user friendly as a novice would need.

Black Ice is a firewall and up there with NOD32, just not as user friendly. Zone Alarm is the best choice here, IMHO, would not consider anything else.

Nortons is a hog, not too popular around here. That said, it is excellent anti-virus protection and a really good firewall too. Just not a fan of how much resources, directories, programs and registry entries it uses compared to the competition.

Some viruses, load into memory and need safe mode or a reboot to remove, this is not a reflection of your anti-virus program, its normal :)

I am considering trying Zone Alarm suite this week. It is anti-virus, spam and firewall all in one. Most tools rank poorly, but Zone Alarm is my favorite firewall, so curious to see how everything else works. In general you will find MajorGeeks, and most geeks, will not suggest ANY all in one package simply because it usually turns out that one tool tends to work great and the others ok. That said, in a new magazine I got they seemed to love Zone Alarm over all others, so being a fan, I am curious.

There is nothing wrong with AVG.

    Its a free, "no-frills" AV.

    Nothing more, nothing less.

Has the same removal power as other AVs.

Black Ice is a joke, unless they improved themselves immensely in the last few years ;)

Zone alarm was voted best yes, as for most of these companies they frankly try and jam too much into one package these days. They should just stick to one thing and be good at it.
Never used black ice but yes , did hear good things about it.
    I still stand with Kaspersky.
Yes norton is b***s*it but somewhat real user friendly, not too bad with updates, worm protections, with 2005 suite, but a real pain when uninstalled. Sometimes it's just better to simply format if you don't know what you're exactly doing.
AVG like I said, tried once. Had a virus stuck in my system restore. Turned off scaned cleaned, kept reappearing so format was the best option. Anyway I think every 3 month a format should be applied no matter what protection you have and how well you mantain and clean your system. There is just too many registry entries, hidden folders and many more traces left. Let's be frank, 40% and that's at least computer users just aren't that knowledgable. While I am at it without hijacking and changing post rather then writing a thread with no need and therefore spamming.
What is a good program to clean out absoultely everything without remembering what you installed, when, etc. I mean it's sometimes impossible to keep track of it when you're on cable conection and like to experiment. :p
Ok too long post, starting to not make sence now

3 months?!? Wow, I practice safe surfing and simply never have a problem. When reviewing some spyware programs, I could not get infected when I tried. Dont know where your surfing, but theres a problem there. On average, I format yearly, but thats only because I install hundreds, maybe thousands of programs on my PC to test them before posting here, so my machine can slow down after a year. Of course, if you have no personal info on your machine, then theres nothing at risk :)

Trying Zone Alarm security suite now, pretty nice so far.

Well my harddrive isn't exactly big. 80 Gb only. I don't do anything near what you do but i do install alot of crap to try out and games. Also my pc tends to get used buy everyone on the house! A little hard to control. Hehe. So far I have been lucky since chaslang helped me clean out vx2 but how does 2350 blocked popups sound!! Lol :p
Besides I have got so many background processes runing that it's not absolutely funny anymore. ;)
Anyway enough with my crap already.....

Yes golfish, but how much do you let your hdd fill up before you actually burn it onto disc and free up space. Do you have 100Gb of music and 60Gb of pron and not to mention movies. Everything you download onto a computer leaves something. :p Some you can delete manualy some with registry cleaners some within i.e tools. *cough cough*

I try to, Jim always thinks I might insult someone, but my nature is to do that, which I probably should not, its really all in fun, since you will find I like self deficating (spelled right?) humor myself. So I take it, and love it, as well as I dish it out... I think :)

Well, it's either self deprecating or self defecating, somewhere in between lies meaning.

Been around here for a while, haven't noticed you dissing anyone undeserved; but then I'm notoriously thick skinned ;) :D

    G.T. R.I.P February 4, 2007. You will be missed.

PC World wrung out Norton, Trend, McAfee, and AVG AV software last summer, with viruses, worms, and trojans. Norton ranked best at identifying and stopping infection of all kinds (and also at tying up the most resources), but not at removing infections once bitten. Trend was slightly behind at identifying, but better at removal. McAfee came in third. AVG ranked very well at identifying viruses and worms, but suprprisingly only identified 20% of the trojans they threw at it. 20% is way too low to make me comfortable.

Now, that was AVG version 6. Version 7 may do better with trojans, but I'm currently using Trend's PC-Cilin.

    Haha!
I was taken in by this post. I had just reformatted and reinstalled ME for this lady who is a friend of my mother's. I of course put on AVG. Then, I read this, think... "Oh, NO!"... hehehe. Good to know for certain that this was one of those e-mails the lamers send in.

Hehe. I have no real experience with ME. Everybody hates it. It was a clean install, and the install of the drivers for her Epson printer was problematic (though eventually successful). The lady hasn't the horsepower for XP. What can one do? I almost suggested 98. I did dual-boot her with a linux distro, complete with the freely available (from here, MajorGeeks) GAG boot loader. Quite a thrill that was.

Won't get too far, though. She's an AOL fan. Loves all that AOL stuff. She's an old lady, doesn't want to experiment much.

    haha! AVG is spyware!
    That's a good one!
    LOL!

I used the free AVG for a while. I found that the new version slowed my rig to
a crawl during the scans. Didn't get the porn. Avg was taking up to eight
min. to do a scan on a 40gb hdd.The M$ beta AV does the same scan in less
than 3mins. Catches more stuff. Spybot has found nothing since the M$ AV
was installed. Adaware has only turned up a couple of nasties. Spyblaster seems to workwell. I don't keep any personal info on my machine.

Hey MA, perhaps somewhere on the main page, you could have a link to a page that has like "the hatemail of the week" or something. And you could respond to it. Not in a supportive type of way, seeing as how thats what the forums are for, but telling them how the stuff they say is impossible and describe why they are totally wrong. It would be a great laugh, and perhaps a great way to deal with those emails lol.

Btw, http://desmondp.host-dot.com/index.php?p=9 which proves theres nothing wrong with free AVs.

FYI, installed Zone Labs security suite and immediately afterwards, I would get random delays opening or swapping between windows that could take up to a minute as well as other perfomance issues. Am uninstalling it now to verify it is the fault of Security Suite, but first impressions are that ZA complete suite is a massive system hog on a pretty high end machine.

I used to use Zone Alarm free and loved it, far as I know, still do. The lag opening Windows has stopped immediately upon uninstalling Zone Alarm Security Suite. Man, can someone NOT come up with a good anti-virus, firewall, spam package?
