I was just having a heated debate in another forum and the power in my entire house flick off then on again for one second and my PC shut off with the power, anyway I wasted a good part of a half of an hour writing this post when it happened, and i was rather annoyed:rolleyes: ... one question would be is to why this happens

so I need a UPS that can handle a 480 watt PSU and a 102 watt monitor ... so one that is rated about 600+ watts ... and preferrably lost cost

    I found this one:

it's little more than I'd want to spend but it's the only one with the wattage I need(even it falls short on the volt amps i need by about 50 or so) ... is it really neccessary for me to buy one rated that high when im only needing it for the occasional "power flicking off than on", i dunno what to call it:eek: ?

    like would this be sufficient?

or could i just get the cheapest one and that would do?

i have a cyberpower 1250 avr. so far its been a great unit, runs forever. these low end ups with auto voltage regulation only clean up the power signal when the voltage is way out of spec, like 10-20 volts low or high. so basicaly its just marketing.
most of the newer models have usb conectivity that allows you to save your work and auto shut down the pc. the ones with a serial port does the same thing, but who wants to mess around with that.
my unit weighs like 40 pounds, so you might want to get it localy to save on shipping.

you might want to look at something around 1000-1500VA

it's good for around 700watt and gives about 14min of runtime

you NEVER want to run at near 100% capacity of a ups...bad..very bad..

might want to look at something like this model...

    http://www.apcc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SUA1500

that's the one i use....and it's very nice to have 14mins of runtime ;) so when the juice goes on and off...that's the thingy to have!

I've got the same one backing up my app server. Great UPS.. and you're right, the damn thing runs forever.

    When not check out APC's
sizing service and find out what you really need?

If bridging of very short dropouts (and surge protection) is all you need, you can get away with a smaller UPS -- especially if you don't plug the monitor into it.

    I figure it this way:

If it's a momentary dropout or voltage sag, it'll be over before you have time to do anything about it. It won't matter if your monitor flickers or goes black, as long as the CPU continues to get power.

If there's an outage long enough to trigger a shutdown, you don't need a monitor to hit CTRL-S to save what you're working on, then let the UPS software shut the system down for you. If you're not around when the power goes out, why is the monitor even on?

That said, there are two ways to under-rate a UPS: run time and current draw. A short run time is tolerable under some circumstances, but if the UPS can't supply enough current, it will shut down the supply immediately, without giving the computer time to save open files and shut down the system. In other words, it won't act as a UPS.

And BTW -- if the 480-watt power supply in your computer is actually drawing that much from the AC mains, it's too small. 480w. is its maximum rating; it should be using significantly less power than that. APC's capacity selector takes that into account. You'd probably be OK with something smaller than the 600 watts you were aiming for.

But if you've got lots of money, buy the best and don't stint on capacity. That's your call to make.
