Lately, it's been taking me longer to boot up because of the blue welcome screen on windows xp. It's almost like it waits there for nothing, no hdd activity, nothing. It takes almost 45 seconds sometimes. Any suggestions?

Do you have to hit Alt + Ctrl + Delete to log in?

Have you tried login in the other way, I preferably do not like the blue screen it seems to me it takes longer to boot up.

I have changed the settings to boop up in a way similar to the way windows 2000 boots up It seems faster to me.

to do what I suggest do the following

star/control panel/user accounts/change the way users log on or off

    Thanks for the tip.

I now have a bigger problem. Programs like AIM stop responding for a while randomly but frequently. I tweaked my computer using XP Smoker, but put all of the defaults back. Now, my computer is tweaked with X-Setup. What should I do?

Another example is Windows Media Player taking about 10 seconds to open an mp3.

Unfortunately you are at a point in which you might have reached the final option. I suggest that you reinstall the operating system. Don't worry all will remain the same all you are doing is installing the windows folder all else will remain the same. at the option of whether to upgrade or install windows all over again choose the upgrade version that way you will not change the other programs. I personally do not see no other way out of your dilemma. I have been at this cross roads in the past. A lot of the times I have chosen to reinstall with good results.

I've had the same problem with the Welcome Screen stalling for long periods of time, and it was after I had downloaded the XP service pack 1. Would you happened to have downloaded this service pack recently?

Other alternatives to this problem is to go to the control panel into user accounts and choose not to use the welcome screen at all. This is a kind of avoidance to the problem, and doesn't actually solve it, but still...

Do these problems happen in Safe Mode?

If not, msconfig can usually be used to narrow down your problem.

Disable services and startup items, and narrow it down.

sounds like a service, they load up during that point of the boot. Check your event log for any errors

The services are disabled, ive done all the basics. It seems my computer is running faster but some programs stop responding and don't use any CPU.
