Anyone excited about this game being released this month?

    I am :D

I've been reading up, apprarently the game is multithreaded, or so rumor has it :)

Finally a game to take advantage of multi core CPUs.

    :)

Ya this game looks really amazing. But you need a top of the line computer to play it, well that rules out me.

I think once programmers adapt, and a few games start being released, then multithreading will almost be standard fare.

    The screenshots themselves are breathtaking!

This gane is going to be awsome! I checked out the trailers on their website and the forest is just unbelievable:) I remember reading that one of the tester rigs was running an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro with a decent processor and ram, and that managed to play it fine with all the settings maxed, but I'm not crossing my fingers.

  5. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

    Don't.

No way a 9800pro will run it max settings, as near as anyone not testing it can tell anyway :)

They have a listing of what to expect for performance for cards. A 6800GT seems to be sufficient, from what I've seen.

  6. Insomniac

Insomniac Billy Ray Cyrus #1 Fan

    Minimum Requirements:

    Windows XP
    512MB System RAM
2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
    128MB Direct3D compatible video card and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver;
    8x DVD-ROM drive
4.6 GB free hard disk space
    DirectX 9.0c (included)
    DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card

    Recommended Requirements:

3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
    1 GB System RAM
ATI X800 series, Nvidia GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card.

    That's pretty hefty requirements.

I doubt a 9800Pro would comfortably run it at a high resolution, let alone at max settings.

So, now that the game has been released, I think this thread is bump-worthy.

Has anyone gone out to get and play it?
My friend picked up a copy from EB Games yesterday, and it's awesome! There are tons of character customization options (definitely takes a while to finalize a character...is it just me or are the noses in general rather large?), and way too many video options.
What I thought hilarious was when my friend, anticipating the awesome outdoor environment, managed to walk around admiring the beautiful day for a couple minutes before it started pouring. :D At least he could observe the rather nice rendering of water droplets. :p Being able to grab and throw stuff around is also pretty cool.

I won't be able to play it for two weeks.

Just noticed this has been released on the PC (of course we had to wait to make sure the xbox 360's owners could play it first, being that they are loyal fans of the series and all). Just looked at some unofficial gameplay videos from various people who already bought the game. It does look very nice, not as nice as I would have expected though and the loading screen is frequently on, but on the whole I'd say it looks a lot better a game than I imagined. Might be tempted into playing it once the patches are released for the PC version ridding us of the square console-pad style lag movement and no doubt a new PC mouse friendly inventory system and a .ini tweak to let us see the stats of the characters and ....... you know, what they did for deus ex 2! :)

definitely could be a winner though!

I have a feeling that this game will inspire some heavy mods, and hopefully will be around for longer than it's predecessor Morrowind.

  11. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

What do you mean be around longer?

Morrowind had two expansions, and quite a few mods. It has been/was around for quite a while.

You sound like this was a port to PC. Both versions were developed and released at the same time, and aside from the multi-threaded nature of the game(woot!), it was not ported from the xbox360.

Your post was confusing to me.

Sorry what I mean is the expansions for Morrowind were very small in comparison to the original, which was in all fairness not that big itself compared to IT's predecessor Daggerfall. It would take about 1.5- 2 hours to walk across Varfendell on foot, compared to over a day in Daggerfall's land. So by comparrison Bloodmoon and Tribunal were very small mod's, although they were released at a low price and by were no means not value for money they did little to prolong the life of the game. Most of the user created Mod's were unfinished or small as well. So what I mean is hopefully people from the community will be creating in depth Mods and conversion for a long time.
As for the other, don't believe what you read or hear it is plainly obvious to me and most at the Morrowind summit forums that Oblivion was chiefly developed with the next gen console in mind. Just take a look at the engine, movement and most other content of the game. Just from hearing what the community is saying tells me that the game is (like DX2) looking like it is meant to be played on a TV not a monitor supporting 1280x1024 resolutions, and the rp depth is very simplified compared to Morrowind and especially Daggerfall.
As for the support of multiple CPU's, it was written by one of the game designers over a year ago that Oblivion will be written as a multithreading supporting game to make use of the 'XBOX 360's' multithreading capabilities. How many people have had multiple CPU's in their PC for years and years and where are the supporting games besides quake 3?

    Adrynalyne Guest

Did I not say, aside from the multi-threaded nature of the game?

    Pretty sure I did.

As for it being designed with console in mind, I think you are confused. You yourself haven't even played it, yet you say don't believe what you read or hear. If you haven't played it, thats ALL you can go by. So, on that same note, I should disregard what you are saying, too :)

I've got plenty of friends who have played this game, and none of them feel its a console port, or even akin to one. Its been sitting on my desk since the 21st, and when I get my machine running again, I'm certain I will come to the same conclusion.

    Something to be noted.

If Oblivion was designed primarily with console in mind, why did it start development before the Xbox360 was a sparkle in MS's eye (Its been in development since 2002)?

Why isn't the TES construction kit available for the 360? It has a hard drive, after all.

  15. jedandjess

Valid points here are my ideas on them. Morrowind was in 'development' since the 1980's. Thats right, Bethesda originally wanted to creat an RPG on a massive scale with unmatched freedom of gameplay. I think the first major title released was Arena. After the release, the company took what they had learned, gathered feedback and started work on another game, eventually to be called Daggerfall. Once this was released, again they started work on another which came to be called Morrowind. There have been other 'experiments' in between (Redguard, Battlespire). My point is that they are not sequels to the previous, just the same game in the same world with more experience and history added, better graphics etc. So Obvlivion was in production before the 360 yes but looking at the evidence I stated in the earlier post it's hard to deny that the title (being almost exactly the same on both formats) was made with the 360 in mind, as the PC is more forgiving in allowances of interface and graphics and control whereas the XBOX360 must stick to set factors due to lack of hardware/software support and a geared audience.
Why isnt TES availible with the 360? Well it's obvious that most console owners who I know who don't game on a PC wouldnt give a damn about making their own maps, learning a complicated piece of software that takes months before you can get something worth releasing to the community. PC hobbyists are more likely to make use of that. Also, you practically need a mouse and a very high resolution to make use of the programs in TES. And why not release the tool that the developers used to make most of the game for free, it's not only a nice gesture but pointless not to do so as well. Like releasing the source code for the quake games one year after the shipping date. Being released on both machines, the PC version will always suffer from the less plyable console's bottlenecks, and I can't see a company taking the time to rewrite the game again to make use of and implement the advantages of another machine.
But another thing I get from Oblivion is that it is even more linear than Morrowind (by some way actucally - you don't accidently stumble on important places or have to seek them out, the game cleverly pushes you towards them so exploration and adventure take more of a back seat), and although I thought Morrowind was one of the most freeform games I've played many fans of Daggerfall say they got the same feeling from Morrowind.
The proof is in the pudding :)

  16. jedandjess

    jedandjess Private First Class

No I havent played it but I've kept an eye on it for a number of years and have seen over an hour of footage, read over a hundred articles and interviews and all the bethesda newsletters so I do know a little of what I'm talking about thanks :)

And with regard to me saying don't believe what you read or hear, I've heard it all before many times with other games which have clearly been lies when the game was released. Quake 4 and Deus Ex 2 being just 2.
GL to you and your friends I hope you enjoy the game and I'm sure it will be worth playing to them, but to me and many others at the Elder Scrolls forums it is a massive let down. Depends on the person, and I'm not trying to push my views on anyone so don't think I am.

Yeah you could say that. On the other hand, a car mechanic that dosent drive still knows more about a car than a person who does drive but couldn't even replace a tire. I suppose I trust my gut feelings more than most, and the people who's opinions I take in about games are people who I've known for years online on various forums and are probably the most devoted to their particular games out of anyone. Still no I haven't played it. Is that all that matters?

Okay all the oopla was fun to read but let's talk about the games....

So i am glad i upgrade my pc a few weeks agos for me i play 1024X768 yes i knows, I have a crappy monitor syncmaster 753DF next upgrade on my list....

So making the character was fun a lot of setting to change and for setting the video i play 1024X768 everything max out with bloom.....

And a little trick i found on others forum is to disable for v-sync in driver
i have nvidia drivers 81.25 and in the game and use the coolbits hack
to change max frames to render ahead from 3 to 0.

For me this add 15 to 20 fps so this is good :)

So now i am in dungeon cells the beggingegning it was a surprise to me when i saw the king and found out they use patrick stuart (capitaine picard in next generation and the proof on the X-men movies)voice for it so i just play and hour so far and i like it alot....

I hope you enjoy it too........

P.S: Adrynalyne what happen to your computer what will be your next one,the spec.....

    XFX OC 7800GTX
    2gb PC3200 Corsair ram
    200gb sata 2 drive
    300gb sata 150 drive

Does that mean you'll be further delayed?

It could be worse- I bought a computer and warranty from best buy just before I went away to school a few years back. I turned it in to be fixed three weeks later due to some hardware malfunction, and didn't see it again for three months while they shipped it and "fixed" it.

well guys i figured I'd post up. I picked up the game when it released. I walked into the store (EB) and looked sternly at the pimple faced kid behind the counter and told him "I need Oblivion." Course he told me they were sold out, but then I yanked out my receipt because I preordered!

so game in hand I went home and played.

This is without a doubt the greatest RPG I have ever played! and I have played few. Very few. But enough to know a good one.

This game is beautiful in every way. Amazing in every sence of the word.

Sure a top end PC will play it with all the bells and whistles but I'm playing at medium settings and what can I say...still beautiful!!

    my 2-3 year old rig:

    AMD 2500+ @ 3000+
    1.75GB PC3200
    Radeon 9800Pro 128mb
    (Oblivion Devs used a 9800Pro 256mb card)

the High end card that the DEVS at BETH used is the 6800 Ultra I think. It was a 6800 for sure though.

My card does not support HDR (it does for HL2 though) so I have to use "bloom" instead.

I'm going to build a top end pc in the next couple of months..Can't wait to play this game on that.

anyway, the game is awesome. AWESOME. I'm off work in 30 minutes and 20 minutes after that I'll be playing all night; and weekend for that matter!

Yea I have to agree, I forbade myself from playing for three years while at uni, degree comes first, and now I can find games that I haven't played for $10, e.g. The Elder Scrolls III, very impressive.

If comp game manufacturers set a more reasonable price for their products from the outset, e.g. $40 instead of $90, this would increase their sales and probably go along way to stamping out pirarcy. I would buy many more games at $40 just for the manuals, maps, etc.

I dunno...I like those paper sleeves, you can fit more than 100 disks in the same amount of space that you do 8 DVDs! Though, I think I'm pretty much the lone proponent of the paper sleeves. :)

Isn't the 90$ edition the collectors edition, and you can buy the normal version sans fanboy stuff for 50$? I thought that was the way it was.

OK Sorry for thread digging but ... here again you say the game was co-developed for PC and 360. So why did the programmers leave that little bugger in the code, which in effect is used to reduce the lag feel of a console pad. Useless for a game using a mouse and a high refresh monitor. Deus Ex 2 had the same problem if I remember, with the same solution.

  43. jedandjess

Not sure of comparison with fable, as I've not played it. Just watched a 1.5 hour flick of the making of oblivion though and from what I can gather the game is about the same length as morrowind, except the world is smaller (7 main towns and around 85 smaller settlements, and lots of space in between). With the game though you can take as long as you want to complete it. I hear there are less towns than in morrowind because there's more to do in them. Over half the data on the DVD is speech though, maybe they should have left some text in and made the world bigger instead of using 100% voice in the game.

To be honest if the game lives up to half of the standard set by Morrowind (which I dont know if you have played) then it could well be worth trying. I've not seen Fable though, and there probably arent many to RPG's to choose from unless you like the old school infinity engine games like Icewind Dale 2 etc (which are a bit long in the tooth now anyways). I know what you mean about being bored of your current games though, some of the games I've finished recently are ones that I'd never even have looked at while I was into Quake 3 and MotoGP online, but when boredom kicks in I find it refreshing just to play something new for a while. Even played Heroes of Might and Magic 4 for a few months, makes me sick to look at it now

In case you didn't notice, nobody cares about your little jabs at the game. Don't buy it, but there are real people posting who own it, and find it eonjoyable. Your armchair reviewer attitude does little for the thread. Go out and buy it, or leave it be if you are so inclined to believe it a console port and/or dislike it.

These reviewers had the game to review properly.

    EDIT
By the way, coolbits is an Nvidia video driver hack, not a game hack. That particular setting is even used to improve UT2004 performance, which is decidely NOT a console port. Its even found its way into Forceware tweak guides.

Same thing, different packaging. And I don't care if you are not interested in my opinions, and find it funny that you presume yourself able to speak for anyone else reading this who may or may not appreciate my advice/thoughts on the game. Maybe me telling it how it is will change things for the better when future games come out.

As far as major reviewers go, I don't believe anything they say on those sites you mentioned the real score is the one given by the public some months after the games release, or my own opinion.

jedandjess - I understand what you are saying about the "dumbification" of games, but that's just the direction games are going. No longer will we see games like Daggerfall or the Gold Box series, so just accept it and move on. I don't like it either, but as they say, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." And there is no sense in fighting a 500lb gorilla, cause you're gonna lose!

Well at last someone understands part of what I'm getting at. A do agree with you Pyrate, and have accepted the fact that games are no longer up to the standards of gameplay or depth that they used to be, despite the change seemingly coming overnight but thats how fast this industry moves. I am thankful of the fact that I grew up playing games right through the golden era from the start of it all around 1990 straight through the 3dfx revolution and the culmination with titles such as Total Annihilation and Giants, the Quake series, Total War and all the good stuff in between. Many younger gamers will not understand the differences or what I'm talking about but thats who the market is catering for and this is all akin to nostalgia. I've no doubt there will be games to come that live up to or exceed the standards set by my favourite games but for now it would be best just to leave it where it is and 'move on', or move backwards and replay all the classics until they appear. Still the whole industry is moving in a different direction with how they create the entertainment in the games, with mass marketing etc. I suppose it was only natural given the incredible scale and economy games now command. But one thing the PC games market has always exceeded in was creating games for the older gamesplayer, and loosing this will hurt the most. I don't mean put an 18 sticker on it, call it The Suffering either. Just feel like something really is being lost for this younger generation.
