No thats not what im trying to tell you. You didn't understand me at all. And I can't be bothered explaining this one or finding the links to the articles again. :)
Wouldn't expect you understand anyway it's too deep, if you don't already know what I mean never mind.

Careful with the insults. Disagreeing is fine, but if you start insulting my intelligence, or anyone else's for that matter, you are asking for trouble.

    Yeah right!

I'm sure developers and programmers are hanging on your every word.

I thought this post was about Oblivion?

That's what people want to read and discuss, rather than reading about how you saved the gaming industry. :)

@ jedandjess...I will suggest at this time that unless you have or intend to purchase and play this game that it would be in your best interest to not post in this thread anymore. You are not really contributing anything other than hearsay and innacuracies...additionally, any personal attacks (insults) will not be tolerated.

There is nothing wrong with a good debate but at least make sure your facts are facts.

    Thanks.

Oh, I've played it some time back :D. I broke down and became tired of waiting for the parts for my real machine. I installed it on a P4 2.6c, 1.5gb PC2700, and Ati 9700 Pro (that crashes on whim).

It wasn't pretty due to hardware limitations, but the interface I felt was very easy to use, and controls intuitive. I found it to have a much easier learning curve than Morrowind, and I felt immediately at home with it. I've played console ports before (FFXI), and this felt like nothing of the sort. I found it very enjoyable, and while gaphics were severely inhibited, it had some nice effects. Gameplay was only slightly choppy, at medium details and resolution (whatever it defaults to). Oh, and aside from the comment that the interface isn't mouse friendly, I had no trouble using the mouse to control it :) I won't be surprised if there are plugins out soon that give more character information, but until then, I can live with it, it is functional enough as is :) Maybe someone will make a mod for my Logitech G15 LCD :D

I can't wait to try this on my real machine, instead of this POS backup :)

This is the first game I've played in a while that immediately sucked me in.

I'm VERY happy with my purchase, and for all the naysayers out there:

    Live with it :)

    First Thoughts:

Well, having played the game for 10+ hours now I figure its time to chime in on what I think. The graphics in this game are nothing short of next gen. The rendering distance is AMAZING, the foliage is nothing short of revolutionary, lighting is believable, and frame rates are for the most part playable with all settings maxed at 1280/1024 resolution. One of my 10+ hours I spent counting the individual leaves on a tree... thats right, INDIVIDUAL leaves! WOW. I take it back, Oblivion doesnt need a jewel case!

The only two complaints I have so far are this. On my rig I am having an odd display problem where the screen goes completely black, yet i can still see the UI. Not sure what thats about, but doesnt happen very often, so i can live with it. Secondly, the Havok physics seem to be off when it comes to killing wildlife, IE wolfs/rats. The corpses seem... well... for lack of better words... to elastic. That being said... im looking forward to forsaking my social life for this game... my GF is already threatening divorce. Next Wednesday Kingdom Hearts II comest out... whats a gamer to do!?

    Final Note: PC FTW!

hey guys, one quick question, i guess ill get flamed or wahtever, but what the hell.

I could tell you a big sob story, butill keep it quick.
Oblivion, yay, excited, got it today cost alot of money etc etc.

read the requirements wrong, i have a Radeon 9200 graphics card. and it needs a 9500!

i been very upset etc etc.

Ill cut to the chase i am very poor, i very seldom buy games, this is an exception because i am a big fan etc etc.

Is there anything at all i can do to like trick the program or something, geee i dunno, theres gotta be something, i mean a 9200, 9500, its still got the same specs 128mb etc etc. whats the difference?

I dont wanna have to spent 100$ + on some garbage out of date card thats just as good as my old one just to play one game...

Man if any of you dudes could give me some advice or wahtever i would appreciate it alot, as you can tell im not an expert on graphics cards.

    thanks.
    Frank.

I don't think there is anything you can do. The game specifically has no hard blocks in it, meaning that it will install, whether you meet requirements or not. At that point, its the hardware not being able to perform the functions needed that is stopping you. It can only scale down to the lowest settings, which is not good enough, most likely.

Even softmodding won't get you to 9500 levels.

You need another video card, and your price restrictions (under 100 dollars) limit you severely.

I picked this up over the weekend. I have been having issues with my 6800GT video card so I pulled it out for some testing and replaced it with my FX5900 backup card.

Ugh. Brutal. 640x480. Can't wait to get my 6800GT back in, or I'll have to buy something new to replace it if it's toast. I refuse to play this game with my current video card, it just looks awful.

Best thing about the whole game - the voiceover by Patrick Stewart. Seen in the 'making of' documentary all the sound guys at bethesda were gathered around the speakers in the sound room, when they first heard his work. They couldn't believe how well he had done the character and neither could I tbh. They said he didn't even listen to the notes sent about the character, just made up the personality from scratch and it was better than anything bethesda expected ;D

thats the kind of quality needed in PC games ha

Saw this and thought great I can test my sys specs before purcahse and ensure I satisfy the req.

Loaded up, conducted testing, viewed results (pitiful scream of aungish............NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO). I satisfy everything except Video Card and only 2 of the 6 parameters are letting me down. Now, desperately grasping at straws, I'm no expert on this and I am suspicious it means hardware replacement but is their possibly a firmware or driver update to satisfy the only two parameters holding me back?

It seems ridiculous that the Vertex Shader v.xx and Pixel Shader v.xx are letting me down?!? Thus I am desperately hoping it can be overcome. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated, though I haven't tried it on PC3 yet so there may still be hope.

a little info for those that asked.

Oblivion is MUCH MUCH larger and longer than Fable. Fable can easily be beaten in 8 hours. Oblivion's main quest can be beaten in 40 hours give or take. If you do all the side quests the length can easily go up to 200 hours total. Not to mention the game world is huge.

to the poster that said Morrowind has a larger world to play in than Oblivion: you are wrong. Oblivion's map is larger. 16 square miles to be exact.

to the guy with the old video card: a R9250 is crap anyway. go out and buy another card. If you really want to avoid spending a bunch of money just buy a R9800SE or a 9800pro. both of these cards will allow you to play at med settings.

I did the main quest up to the point where one of the guys offers the use of his horse. I took off into the wilderness and never looked back. Without returning to the main quest line, I have been enjoying the game tremendously. I just recently purchased a 4 story house, furnished it, and hired a maid. Back to my dungeon crawling now...

I sumpaphise (er spllin) with you Halo I have to get another vid card before I can play it (pointless at impaired qual imo) and I only just fail. So an expensive game although I can probably get a R9800SE or a 9800pro it is probably not worth it as I will be in the same boat again in 2-3 months so looking at the 7800gs to make the sys last another 6-12 months before complete upgrade (SLI as Crossfire reveiws say a complete dud so far).

Bold Eagle is in Australia, so most likely when using $ means AU$ in which 1 AUD = .70 cents US.

@Bold Eagle, yes an upgrade is needed for my desktop ( laptop failed or ATI drivers and OS as it didnt know them.. but no doubt I could run the game but not quickly ) but that can wait a while until I decide what to go with.... Intels Conroe is looking in the top 3 slot at present. From the pic Adryn has posted and the ones I seen on the net its an impressive game, :)

Sorry, guess i wasnt specific... following this thread, i found that someone posted
    http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=296193&hl=9200se
which has a pretty good work around for any of us that have "old" or non supported graphics cards. I wasnt sure if anyone here had used them, or knew of the fixed exe and shaders files.... both are found there, but it took some serious time to find it. Also had to do some tweeking of my .ini file to get it running good on my ti 4600. I still have some strange graphics issues (i think- havnt seen it running on a "good" machine), but the game is playable, runs smooth, looks great (what graphics i can see) and is EXTREAMLY addictive. Please post if you need to know what i used to get 'er running ok... this fix seems to work for just about everything, (maybe different cards need to change .ini file to make it "perfect", but the fix is the shader package, and modified .exe, the rest is up to reading and moddin the .ini)

man oblivion is garbage aye, no one buy it.

for some damn reason i think oblivion blocked that forum topic and deleted all the threads about old gphx cards, they must be in cahoots or something with the gphx card developers, thats prolly why the reqs are so high.

but yea after stressing about fixing the ini. files and patches etc, i played for about 2 hours, and realised what a sack of sh1t the game really is.

Bethesda really cocked up on this one, no doubt they worked really hard on the visuals and all that crap, but it looks like they're just using the source engine 'HL2 etc' on Morrowind, i can totally imagine, and im sure this actually happened:

4 years of developing some ridiculous graphics, that are incapable of running on most PCs, a couple months before release realise they have no storyline, no gameplay, no playability.

They take the most cliched and hated aspects of any PC based RPG and repack them yet again, for a 4th time.

Yes they must have like 100 'dungeons' but firstly dungeons are gay, theyve always been gay!
but most atonishingly, the dungeons are devoid of any real goal, you search them for ages fiht a few stupid monsters, and find nothing in there.
    so begun asking myself...'why bother'

dungeons suck, and you get no reward from searching them, and the same principle holds true for the entire game, every AI, every room is 'different' in the sense that visiually yes it is 'different', but fuk sake, theyre all the same in the sense that it doesnt accomplish anything.

Compared to say Final Fantasy, where if you find a secret dungeon its exciting because there will be some special rare magic or something, that you're so lucky to find.

i started the game, got a horse, killed it, searched some dungeons, and that was it. The same old shit, i could take the time to be a master pickpocket, but theres nothing worth stealing, except some bread that does nothing or a fukin cup or something.

bethesda suck it dry, you and your 109$ i couldnt eat for a week cos of that.
fortunately it looks like not everyone is stupid enough to be pursuaded by the graphics, and most people see through the hype.
looks like alot of game companies are going bankrupt.

i bought morrowind for 10$ and it was the best money i ever spent, oblivion is about 25$ worth at best.

    what do you guys think?

  32. Coyotesmith

    Coyotesmith Private E-2

hmm... i enjoy it, i realize when you play it for the first time, it seems there is NO story line. Thats part of what i like about it... it takes time, and discovery to find out all the things you can do (good, evil, indifferent, ect). The AI is kinda strange so far.. took forever for me to figure out that finding quests can be obtained just by listening to em for a while, or following them around.
This CERTIANLY isnt final fantansy- one final quest, only 1 goal, do this, go there, get this to open that..... this leaves it a lot more open, and discovery is half the fun for me. Also, one thing that i really enjoy about it is all the mods out there, and the ability to create your own that have different effects to the game... it lets you change the game to the way YOU would like a game to play.

Your right i think about the closing of the forum threads... I dont think there is some "conspiracy" to say, but i can understand the money issues behind it, and if this were my creation, i would want someone to play it for the first time and "see" the best i could do. If they were smart, they would have lowered the requirements down, or put out patches, so more copies could be sold and played.

I guess, to sum things up, I am really enjoying the game, Love the graphics, and will have to probibly play many more hours untill i can tell you how good/bad it is, and then, maybe download some mods, create a couple of my own, and change my mind a couple of times. LOL

Definatly the best single player rpg out there right now... wish it could go multi, but making THAT game would be a nightmare for anyone!

    Thanx!

I think you have an opinion.

As for old graphics cards not being supported...note the word, old. Technology moves on and if you don't, you get left behind.

As for not being able to run on most PCs:
    Clicky

Thats at 1680x1050, which I play. I average 25-35 fps, which for this game is definately sufficient. My computer hardware is all at least a year+ old technology, save the motherboard.

The game is what you make it. If you need a linear, hold your hand and point the direction game, this is NOT for you.

This tells me that you didn't spend more than 5 minutes on the game.

You got a horse and killed it.

Now you are an expert on the game?

    Hmmm.

No point in thieving? How about casing the jewelry store, then wiping it clean after hours? Every shop in Imp city has been cleaned out by me. Steal bread all you like--I go for the expensive stuff ;) Rob the rich and give to the needy--myself.

Did you join the Dark Brotherhood and perform their deeds? Did you become an Arena champion? No, of course not. Did you do any of the Thief's Guild quests? Did you join the Mage guild and do their quests? How about the Fighter's guild? Did you find the Gray Prince's true origin?

Do you even know what an Oblivion gate is?

Thats just a small amount of the stuff BESIDES the main quest.

You haven't even scratched the surface of the first hour of the game, much less anything else. You cannot base a game experience off the intro.

The game is what you make it.

yea man, have you played morrowind though dude, its practically the same in every way.

and do you also see what i mean about the dungeons/caves/exploring etc?

you can search the farthest reaches of the ocean, (20 miles or wahtever) it doesnt matter you wont find anything, search every cave every house, everything and not find anything worth searching for, like no big gold.
in fact you dont even realy need gold in the game, theres nothign worth buying.

so you explore a cave for 45 mins, and all you find is a cup, does this sound familiar?

  38. Jawa Slayer

I can't really comment on how the game is later on because I haven't played far enough through, but I kinda get what you mean about the dungeons. I decided to search the dungeon in those ruins directly oppersite where you come out of the sewers at the beginning, and I personally like to search every corner of the dungeons to reveal all the map and find every item/kill every baddy. After about an hour of searching and killing a bunch of bandits and skeletons I got a letter and a few gold coins from the "boss" at the end.
Also it seems to me in this game they drop you in the deep end and don't really promote the side quest side of of game as much as they did in morrowind. I like how you can jump straight to most major areas, but that kind of overwhelms you at first I think, where in morrowind your told to go join a guild and earn some experiance, in oblivion its go find so and so, go into oblivion, hardcore main storyline, straight away. Hopefully there will be a point in the main story where things calm down and you get to explore a starter city, maybe join a guild, have some side quest fun e.g. Balmora in Morrowind before the main quest realy gets underway.

When I was at the sigil stone north of Skingrad, I grabbed it (transendent stone every time) , the screen went white, and then, nothing. I wasn't teleported out, so I just walked out of the gate. Not closed. Crap. anyways, I ignored it, and go about my business. Back to the MQ. That was the 5th gate i tried to close. All the others work fine. Now I'm in the gate in Bruma as part of the MQ and guess what. EXACT same thing. Please help?

As for not finding any large stashes of gold in the caves, if you read the scrolls lying around, they give you clues as to things of worth, such as precious stones on plinths you can knock down with a bow and arrow.

Anyone notice how Thoromir looks like Ronnie Barker?
