i have the sims 2 holiday pack and it isnt working on my comp. I easily meet all the specs required and it is not the disk becasue it works fine on my other comp. I cant figure out what is wrong, but after i install it and try to play it it says the sims 2 has encountered and error and is forced to close, then it says send error report. I had another sims game wit the same specs work fine on my comp and i cant figure out why its not working, if someone who wants to help would like to know that i remember i was attempting to read the error report and there was a folder included, i will try to get what folder was included and get back to you in like 5 minutes, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try uninstalling the game completely, then reinstall it and apply any official patches.

    Then try the holiday pack.

This is another case of Windows being particularly obscure. You see (and I'll say this several times), appcompat.txt is not the problem.
I can hear a crowd of people saying "Yes it is! It's right there in this error message!". That's what I mean by Windows being obscure. Read the error message carefully and you'll see what I mean. Appcompat.txt is not the problem, it's not the error, and it's not the cause of the error ... it's information about the error.
    •
Appcompat.txt is simply a reporting file used when uploading error reports to Microsoft. You've seen the message asking you if you would like to "report this error to Microsoft"? Appcompat.txt is a file that is uploaded if you say yes.
Appcompat.txt is not the problem. It contains information about the problem. Open it up in notepad, and you'll see what I mean. When you get an error message that references appcompat.txt, it'll usually give you the full path to the file. So click on Start, Run and enter: notepad

    C:\DOCUME~1\username\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER7b4e.dir00\appcompat.txt

Where "C:\DOCUME~1\username\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER7b4e.dir00\appcompat.txt" is replaced with the actual information that was presented in the error message. You'll see a lot of technical information that begins with this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?>
    <DATABASE>
Followed by information about the program that was running at the time an error occurred. Note: it's not meant that you understand this. It's meant for the engineers back at Microsoft to use to analyze failures and hopefully provide fixes over time. I point it out here, simply to drive home the point:
Appcompat.txt is not the problem. It contains information about the problem.
So what do you do when you get an error message that references appcompat.txt? In my opinion, a) allow windows to report the error to Microsoft, if it asks you to, and b) forget about appcompat.txt. Unless you're technical enough to understand what's inside of it, it will not help you. Focus instead on what you were doing when the problem happened. We all know that programs can crash for many, many different reasons. The problem could be due to a bug in an application, a problem with your machine, a bug in Windows, a security issue, or any number of other things. Just saying "it's appcompat.txt" tells you exactly nothing about the problem.
The steps to take then will depend on what you were doing and what applications were involved. A fix could be as simple as a configuration change, a virus scan a system file check, or as complex as a complete rebuild and reinstall of Windows. But without more information, there's simply no way to know.

thanks to ask leo for that info.

    Re: appcompat file

Please keep all the same posts together and not start multiple new ones on the same topic, helps a great deal when people are trying to assist you.

plus the point of forums are to share ideas and actually answer back, we tend to keep the replys in the threads and not in emails, that way anyone else with same issue can search and find the fix hopefully.

SO to that end have you actually read what Insomniac and N5638J have posted?

Being a mobile GPU in the Nvidia Gforce GO series, the majority if not all drivers for these GPUs come from the manufacturer of your laptop,

Who is the maker and the model and version number of the laptop, go to their website, goto Support and Drivers and located the downloads available for your pc.

If you have trouble tracing them down, then post as Adrynalyne said the specs of your PC, which will be Maker, Model and Version etc and we will do our best to aim you in the direction of the updated drivers.

If the manufacturer does't supply them, which isn't unheard of, you can try Omegas. I use these with out P4 laptop, due to crappy driver support from HP.

Are you sure your PC meets minimum requirements?

Download THIS utility and unzip it to your desktop and run it.

Don't run it from it's zip container or it won't work. Post back with the results.

Well , Portis , if you follow Insomniac and Adrynalyne's 'guides' precisely above and actually post your results in a reasonable manner , maybe they will try to help you again.

Do you have an onboard graphics card?
If so, that may be your problem. You could try updating the drivers, but Sims 2 needs a DirectX 9 compatible graphics card to work.

Re: kernel messing up sims 2

Sorry Steeev, but merging the second thread from Portis took yours slightly out of context but this is what you were answering in the quote below, you will find some answers to your question in the rest of this thread.

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=739778&postcount=17

Graphics is mobile Gforce GO BTW.

Portis, we can only help is you help us to help you, small 1 line or 4 word replies tell us nothing, a few other questions.

As you say it worked in the past on this laptop, did you have all Windows XP updates and service packs installed? as you only have SP1 installed at present.

to try and find your Model name and version as "HP something" doesnt really get an answer in the HP help & support search box I'm afraid, goto this link http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html?pageDisplay=support and click Start Detection which will take you to the downloads and info for your HP Laptop.

You could try the drivers linked to from Adrynadyne above.

    No probs Halo :)
My experience of The Sims 2 is that it's a graphics hungry game, and that it needs DirectX9 and a directX 9 compliant Graphics card.
Omega drivers are very good, and work accross the board for ATI and Geforce cards AFAIK.
Lots of good advice in this thread, ball's in portis's court now.

I know its frustrating for you... hey I'm getting frustrated for you as I don't know how I/we can help you more than whats been posted already, troubleshooting when we are not in the same room ( if one of us was actually in the same room it may only take an hour or so to work out whats wrong ) as you, is difficult at the best of times, which is why we need the questions we ask answered as full as possible.

Why don't we start by trying to find some info out, which will help us find some updated drivers and a possible fix for you, as you have told us that Sims2 worked on this PC before.

    1. Since having a working Sims2 on the PC, have you re-installed windows XP or updated to XP from a different windows version?

    2. Please run the HP Product Detection Tool http://h20270.www2.hp.com/ediags/gmn/index.aspx ( if not located in this link then goto HP and type in the search box "product detection tool" ) this will hopefully tell us which model PC you have or via reading through this http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...8&product=18073&lc=en&dest_page=product&cc=us

You could also look on the case of the PC for any version numbers, generally on the bottom, the screen surround, near the keyboard.

    3. Plus re-read back through this whole thread and cover some of the steps, it may actually be well worth trying the Omega Drivers Adrynalyne posted earlier and Steeev recomends :)

Right after i reintalled it it said i had 1.6ghz then after i installed my wireless router thing, thats what i thikn it was, it says i now have only 797 mhz, which seems very low cuz this is a new comp. and the game is working its choppy but working, but how can my thing change from 1.6 ghz to 797 ghz and i couple times i have seem it go as low as 3 hundred and something, can anyoone help witht that lol

Portis, are you talking about the speed of your processor? Where are you seeing this number?
Whatever it is it's halving and quartering.. Very odd...

Ah ok we are getting somewhere slowly, on inital posts it seemed as if you had an oldish laptop with 800mhz CPU, now as you say it has been up to 1.6ghz and its a new laptop then leads me to believe that the power managment settings are kicking in to save battery power ( which is normal for modern laptops, eg. my laptop gets as low as 850mhz and max is 2.2ghz dependent on being battery or mains or me using some 3rd party power managment software, which I prefer over windows own settings )

Is you CPU Intel or AMD?

OK the first of the questions I posted is partly answered, you still as far as the info above are only using XP SP1? their is an update called SP2 which beings many updates, including some for wireless, any reason you have not upgraded?

Another we still dont know what model or version your PC is... if you bought it new since 2004 then there will be info on the laptop somewhere as to the model name eg. dv4025ea is a sample model name of a HP Pavillion laptop.

I have linked you to the HP website earlier with links where you can find this info out as, they will have all the drivers we may need or at least help in updating your PC.

I didnt want to use this next route as HP once we have the model number will give us everything we need from one section, but you can use this software http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181 and once installed generate a report on your PC, then attach only the saved text file for us to look through ( to attach a file click the Manage attachment button and browse for the saved file then click upload once uploaded close the box and type your replied answers to the questions posed and then submit reply note: a posted "inline" as in copy and pasted text into the message box Everest report, I will delete. )

As you say the game is installed ok and runs but slowely, as a test do this and test the game and your reported CPU speed again,

Plug your laptop into the mains power.

Goto the Control Panel click Power Options then click Power Schemes tab then in the drop down Power Schemes menu choose Max Power then Apply

does the game get less choppy or still the same?

if the same we will definatly need your Laptops model number to install the correct drivers.

my comp is this one and those are the drivers, i have the videocard one and no i dont have sp2 is it rlly that important??

  33. Alex123456

    Alex123456 Private E-2

i mean i thnk my comp should have at least 1.6 mhz cuz its like brand new and why does it keep splitting?

  34. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

Sorry my bad.. yes choose Max Battery ( funny I was even checking it on my laptop and still typed it wrong ) and still have the laptop plugged into the mains.

I dont get what you mean in the first part of this statment...? but the second part I can answer, Microsoft wouldnt have issued SP2 if it wasnt important, the service pack goes well beyond what most people think, in just adding an updated firewall, popup blocker for IE etc

as I mentioned earlier as its a laptop and for a wild guess its possibly an Intel Centrino 1.6ghz and they do have power settings different to a desktop in which they alter the clock speed of the cpu to save power.

To be very confident in giving you the correct and full answers I/we still need your model number of laptop ( which on a new HP laptop should be near the keyboard or on the bottom next to the COA XP sticker ) without this I cannot direct you to any updates to the GFX driver or any info ( actual CPU speeds etc ) that maybe relevent, so I will have to gracefully bow out of this thread as I dont have the time to spend repeating the same questions over and over again.

but will keep an eye on the thread for new information.
