    Hey guys!
This problem has been nagging at me for the past few days and it just so happened that it all started right after I uninstalled Norton Internet Security and installed Norton Antivirus 2008, Spysweeper (most up-to-date version), and Comodo Firewall. At first, I got a blue screen that says "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer etc." So I just uninstalled Spysweeper and reinstalled it and that seemed to fix the problem for a little while until last night. It came back so I just manually rebooted the computer. Then, this morning I put the computer on Standby and went to eat breakfast. I came back and hit spacebar and it came up like I just turned on my computer and I got this message:

The system has recovered from a serious error.

and when I click "For more information about this error, click here"

    I get this:
    BCCode : 1000008e BCP1 : C0000005 BCP2 : BF8496F2 BCP3 : A79BA2B0
    BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1

I have absolutely no idea what it means but maybe you guys can help me...and yes, I am a novice at computers :p

    Your help is greatly appreciated!!

    Hi Douglas!
    Welcome to Major Geeks!

If your system was working before you made these software changes to it, please go back to a restore point previous to the deinstallations and new installations that you made. If you are using XP, please click on Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore. Check the box for putting the computer back to an earlier restore point and click on next. Look at the calendar and try to estimate a time as nearly as possible to just before you first uninstalled Nortons. Select that day on calendar and then finish the process. You can also undo a change like this so don't worry about it being a permanent change.

If this works, it will restore your previous software and remove the new installations. Let us know if this works and we will help you to come up with a virus protection which doesn't involve software conflicts.

    Hey Abri!
Thanks for the greeting :). I installed those programs because my Norton Internet security subscription was going to run out in 2 days so if I did do a system restore, wouldn't my system completely lack a security system? I'm just worried that a virus or something is infecting my computer and messing it up...is it possible that I wrongly installed Norton or Comodo and thats the cause of this madness?

Nortons is very tricky in their installation/deinstallation processes. Going back to an earlier restore point would simply get the computer working smoothly again so it would be possible to proceed in a more successful way. I'm guessing that what happened is that the deinstallation may or may not have been complete, beginning some problems, but that then what became difficult was throwing Comodo and Norton together. A simple rule of thumb is that if something doesn't work, back up and try something else. To successfully remove Symantec properly, you need to use their automated removal tool which is at their website or you can get it here at: Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT)

Anytime you uninstall an antivirus and install a new one, you are vulnerable unless you are disconnected from the internet. If you're behind a router, you'll have adequate protection for a firewall or you can turn on your Windows firewall when you uninstall the Nortons security suite. If you want to stay with Norton's as an antivirus but want to leave the Internet Security Suite and get a separate firewall, then I suggest first completely uninstalling Symantec, run HijackThis (link for instructions below) to make sure all the Symantec services are stopped (you can attach it here and let us look at it) and then install the new antivirus program. See if you can make that transition successfully first before you try something with a firewall. Then if you have problems, you can narrow it down to a single program. Symantec has two removal programs, an automated one and a manual one. They recommend using the automated one first and if that doesn't completely get all the programs stopped, to then use the manual one.

    Hey guys!
Another problem on top of this one.....I put the computer on stand by and started it back up and went onto my account, when I did tried to access the internet via Mozilla Firefox but it said something that it couldn't so I decided to restart the computer....I got a blue screen that said:

    Stop: c000021a {Fatal System Error}

    The windows logon process ystem process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0 x c0000005 (0 x 00000000 0 x 00000000
The system has been shut down.

Then I just manually rebooted and logged onto my account and got this:

I haven't been able to do any of the stuff Abri has told me to yet because I've been really busy with school and all that (that darn AP chemistry!) so I just decided to quickly post this since it seems really critical...hope to hear from y'all soon!

    Hi Douglas,
if you can, try the earlier restore point from before you uninstalled Symantec's internet security suite. If you have trouble getting into the computer, try to make it to safe mode by hitting F8 about once a second during the boot sequence. If you can't make it to safe mode, then you will need a cd to boot up from. From a completely different direction, it could be you're having a hardware problem.

    Hi Douglas,
I don't see any evidence of malware in your log, although it was not installed and run according to our instructions and so I can't tell too much from it. What I can tell, and you can look at the log yourself, is that you have tons of Symantec programs running.

In order to properly remove Norton from your system, you need to remove them with the Norton Removal Tool, which I listed in a previous post, or you can go directly to Symantec's website and use the automated removal tool there. Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT).

Please disconnect from the internet and COMPLETELY remove Symantec from your system, AND Comodo AND Webroot, and see if you are still getting the BSOD. Please do not reinstall anything until you've tried booting and rebooting a number of times. You seem to have three firewalls running at the same time right now and they will simply shut your cmputer down, each detecting the other as an intruder.

Please let me know the results of this.

    Hey Abri!
Sorry for not running HijackThis properly...I just did it right now....hopefully I did it right this time :p....let me know if I did it wrong again lol. As for uninstalling Norton, Comodo, and Webroot completely, do I need to be in safemode for this? I uninstalled Norton before with the tool you gave me and the HiJackThis log that I did wrong was after I did that. Thanks for your support so far! :) I really appreciate it :D

    Hi Douglas!
Just run the nortons removal tool in normal mode. After you're removed everything that has to do with Norton and Comodo, please post a fresh HijackThis log so I can see if anything's left.

    Hey Abri!
Problem solved! I guess I just had too many anti-virus and anti-spyware programs and they were all conflicting with each other (my dad took it into Circuit City...) But the dude uninstalled everything except Norton and Spysweeper. Should I reinstall Comodo Firewall or does Norton Antivirus 2008 come with its own firewall?

Was the trip to Circuit City in the middle of all this we've been doing, or was it before that?
If your computer is working well, then please make sure to set a fresh restore point as per the following instructions. After that, you can try Comodo again. Norton Antivirus does not have a firewall and you need one, but it's important to find one that is compatible with Nortons. If you notice your computer is not working as well, then go back to the new restore point. Here are the instructions and information for you to look at:
