Just wanted to say: I surfed and found the McCain web site and may have given them an email but not my name. Now .. apparently they have associated my email address with my home address and cross referenced it to a voter registration list... because I am now receiving emails addressed to my brother who has not lived in my house for 13 years. I have no contact with him.

I am a little upset about this and feel that this should be illegal. I feel if they can do this much research over a random hit on a website.. well, "they" must know everything about all of us.

    Is this illegal???

Don't know. Ask a lawyer. However I tend to doubt that this actually happened exactly as you stated. While they could easily see the IP address from when you logged into their website, it would take a lot more work and cooperation from your ISP to get your personal information. There is no way they would go to the trouble it would take to track all of this information down just to send emails to your brother. That is not unless you were sending any kind of threatening or questionable messages to there website. But if you did that I'm sure that the SS and/or FBI would have already been banging down your door.

Also how would you be getting emails that are addressed to your brother? The emails would be going to your brother not to you.

Yes, that is the point. I did not use my brother's name, when I logged onto the site. They are sending e-mails to my email address which is issued through my cable provider (I pay the bill). They have cross referenced my address information with the (old) votor registration lists. I am not registered as a republican.

Recently I received a jury duty summon for him as well ... and he lives 3 towns away... his could be from an old car registration... but I believe it is from the voter registration list.

Further, I don't think I gave them my address.... I know I didn't give them my brother's name.

I may try an experiment with another email address/provider.

Good luck with this. I suggest if you continue to have problems with this that you take it up with the website you say you accessed and also with your ISP. The easiest thing to do know would be to delete your email account and create a new one.
