I dont want to start a flame war, but why do some people come right behind your post and either:
restate your post - adding nothing.
    or
jump over your post like they know the correct answer, when there is not enough info in the posters question to give a definative answer?

ie: I have ram in my pc, how much is enough?
    --------------------------------------------
my ans: Ok, how much do you have? what OS? ect...
    --------------------------------------------
others: Are you running 98, 2k, xp?
others: Oh you need 1 gig easy!!

    These crack me up!!!
How about waiting till we have more info, or a fresh idea to add?

I notice that as well. There are some people that give the same responses to almost every post. They rarely help or have an answer.

I love to help if it's something I've dealt with or have a definite answer for, but won't even touch it if it's way over my head. What's the point?

I imagine that those who do this are the ones who talk nonstop, just to hear themselves talk, and continually interrupt people when they are talking.

Oh well, there are a lot of really smart and helpfull people here, so I just ignore the "wannabes" and wait for one of the "seasoned vets" to reply. In the end, I always get the help I need.

    Oh yeah, totally!

I get so annoyed when I give an answer that I know is sure to solve someones problem, and then some jerk replys with the SAME THING I JUST SAID!!!

Then, the original poster usually thanks THAT PERSON, since they were the last to reply!

    Oh well. I don't need praise. I KNOW I'm smarter. :p

Sometimes a post close to yours "may" have been someone typing the same answer out as you at the same time, when they post they have no idea you have posted util they submit and read the thread again.... Now you do get the ones that say "I was just about to post that" .. yeah right!

Other questions when there isnt loads of info can sometimes be second educated guessed, I would only really do this if I was in ballpark with answer.

My favs are NOT READING THE THREAD TOPIC CORRECTLY and posting something thats not whats asked for OR the "help me with Internet Explorer" and posting use "Firefox its l33t" and that really helps the person asking for help for IE or whaterver other app.

Another pet peeve of mine is posting workarounds instead of fixing the fugging problem.

    "I got IE problems"

    --Use firefox!

    I have errors on startup.

--Just leave em unchecked in msconfig.

    Stupid stuff like that.

Or, bashing MS instead of helping.

    "Xp won't work right."

--Thats because Windows sucks. Go to Linux.

I've heard the above one too many times.

What is the the proper protocol when answering or replying to a thread?

I would never intentionally undermine a post by a member here at MG's and I don't think I ever have, if so, someone please correct me.

I have added to a response just to get additional information like updates, OS, etc., to make sure it was not one thing or another.

This is what I go by, sort of my way of posting:

    1. I look for threads with obvious solutions or at least one's that I know the solution.

    2. Then, I try to find the threads that have no response and been on the board for awhile. Just to ask general info to help and bump the post for other members to see. I hate to see someone neglected when I know the answer is here or can be solved.

    3. Follow those that are difficult, for anyone, and respond as needed.

    4. I always consider previous posts and make sure that I do not re-post the same solution with more technical mumbo-jumbo.

I agree with being acknowledged for the correct solution, it is kind of satisfying to know that you helped in someway.

I think a Senior Member or Moderator could give all of us a general idea of the right and wrong's.

    Learning As I Go Sergeant

Coming from a lay person's stand point. I can offer this perspective.

All the fighting is over people trying to help other people. Regardless of who posts first or who was more correct, ultimately someone was helped in solving a problem.

I know from that stand point - I have really appreciated any and every person who has taken the time to respond to my questions.

I completely understand how annoying "johnny come lately" can be - when just "chimming" in on what you've already said, but people are still getting support and the spirit of this forum lives on.

I would just like to re-iterate, I really have been greatful to everyone's help in the past.

I'm almost at the point of screwing something up just so I can escape the lounge and have a real post ;) .

    Thanks guys,

    LAIGo

Coming from a new member's point of view: overzealous? I was so happy to find this site, I went out of my way to look up info to try to help anyone I could. I also jumped into these other forums to enjoy (so I thought) the community and comraderie. Like Matacumbie said, there should be rules. Since I am new to computers, I obviously know a lot less than most here. So I have basically stopped trying to help. Even when I have the answers, I'm not acknowledged (no big deal). I've also slowly come to the realization that I'm either on people's ignore lists, or simply ignored in these forums (different point of view?), also not a problem. But rules would help. For instance, specify what kind of humor is acceptable, maybe give a quiz on computer knowledge before membership, post guidelines on which points of view are allowed, etc. :)

Mike, here is my golden #1 rule of forums and for the internet for that fact.

#1. It's the internet. You don't know us (and vice versa) from a hole in CP's underwear. Don't let it rule you.. don't get passionate about it and certainly don't let it addict you to the computer.
#2. If you feel mad about someone you've never met lambasting you with his/her keyboard muscles, put the mouse down and turn on the history channel. 7pm every night is Modern Marvels.. good show! :)
    #3. Don't post angry.. :p

many years of forum use / modding/ admin'ing etc and many blow ups later... I learned the hard way. No sense in any one else taking the same path.

People, it's just not that important.

Something else I notice- people don't seem to read the whole thing! I said- twice!- no problem- sorry, folks, but I only know one definition of "no problem": problem is not there  Also, assuming I'm mad (or anything else) is odd- I only said what I see going on. Life's too freaking short to waste time getting mad. Like I said, sometimes people see things differently, or express themselves in a non-standard way. So, for the 3rd f**king time, NO PROBLEM :D :D :D (P.S.- Kodo, I'll have to buy a TV before I can watch it ;)
