I'm receiving the following Runtime error C:program files/symantec antivirus/rtv scan.exe It immediately comes up on the computer when I boot it up. The computer seems to be running fine. I have unhooked the computer from my network. When I try running a Norton virusscan it stops and closes the scan. I uninstalled Norton and Reinstalled with the same runtime error popping up. I'm currently running Windows XP Home Edition and Norton Corporate edition 10.1
Does anybody have any guidance on this? Thank you

Do you have Norton scheduled to run at start up? RTV ---> Real Time Virus scan.

I will look when I get home from work. I'm currently at work right now. I will check and get back with you. Thanks for answering me.

I did go home and check the Norton last night. How do you check to see if the Real time Virus scan is on?

A few things you could try:

Start / run / type "msconfig" without qoutes and go to the startup tab and see if it is checked there. If so, uncheck it. Reboot. See if the problem persists.

Or, look in the start up folder under all users and remove it for now...see if it persists at startup.

Uninstall the software ....reinstall and do not have it "run" at startup.

Check the properties of the scanner and stop it from running at startup.

I am not that familiar with all the setting in Norton ...as most of us hate it and don't use it.......did you pay for the program or was it preinstalled?

I got it free with the Navy. I've heard it really is bad, but I can't beat the price. It is the Corporate edition. I will use you information tonight when I get home. Unfornutely I can't hook the computer to the Network until I know what this error is, with all the viruses out there I don't want to chance it. Thanks for the help.

Go into Options and Scheduler and turn off the boot sector scan there.....then see if it happens ....may be a flaw with your computer configuration ...there is some history about it having problems with certain motherboards.

I went home and tried all of the above last night to no avail.

This is curious ....let's run thru the procedures and see if something is amiss...
Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
