Not sure what happened but my computer is stopped from getting into the Internet through Internet Explorer. Keep getting an error message "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" and when I try to send the error report it too comes back with the same above mentioned message. Also, my Microsoft programs are somewhat affected.

I was able to open AOL and when I tried once again to access the net everything freezes.....I'm freaking!

I am contacting you through my laptop to try to find out what to do and also can I email the programs you have on the 'read this first' to myself so I can at least open them via aol??

HELP!!! Should I try to use System Restore?

    computer info: Windows XP Professional
    version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519:Service
    Pack 2)
    AMD Duron (tm)
1.31 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM

Hope this is everything you need!

This does not sound like it is all malware. You could have malware problems but most of this sounds more like other problems. I know your infected PC may not have internet access but see how much of the below you can do on it by downloading stuff to your laptop and then somehow transferring to the problem PC. Then you can copy the logs back to your laptop to upload here. At a minimum, make sure to get the GetRunKey, ShowNew, and HijackThis logs.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

      • [*]runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
        [*]newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

Followed all your instructions....or tried to I should say.

I did the "read & run me first" and since I don't have I.E. working on the computer, I downloaded GetRunKey, ShowNew, SpyBot-Search & Destroy,Microsoft Windows Defender, Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, CounterSpy and Hijack This, onto a cd and then put the cd into the "bad" computer and copied all to a file I just called Spyware. Here's what happened.

RunKey and ShowNew would not open, they blinked and then nothing would happen. When I tried to reboot into safe mode, I would get an error message from Microsoft saying Microsoft has encountered an error and must close this program and if I tried to send a report on it, it would just come up with another error message saying the same thing and would then freeze up the desktop! When I rebooted and tried again a blue screen came up that filled the whole page and had a error message that said MSN_LIST_CORRUPT and I had to reboot again.

I ran Ccleaner in normal mode (and all the others) and it found 14 items it deleted and most were MS items. I ran Windows Defender it said my definitions were 231 days old (could not update as I can't get to the internet so I ran it as it was) and it came up with nothing? I ran Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and it said no malicious software was found. Ran SpyBot and it came up with 10 items which I had fixed/removed. I ran HiJack This (changed the name per the instructions) and the log is attached and I sure do hope you can make some sense of all this.

Also, I forgot to mention Microsoft Word appears to be corrupted now? When I open it, it has 4 files listed on the left side under document recovery with one back from January and 1 from June amnd 3 from Augus 22????? It won't let me do anything with them and the only way I can get out of it is by going to task manager and ending Word.......What next???

Sorry but based on what you are telling me and what I see in only a HijackThis log, you are not having malware problems. You have other non-malware problems. You should try seeking help in the Software Forum.

You should however uninstall Microsoft AntiSpyware it is no longer supported and has been replace by Windows Defender.
